Mavericks Helps Roosevelt Students Read

2/27/06

Mankato, Minn. – After practice last Thursday, the Mavericks took off their court shoes and took their classroom skills to Roosevelt Elementary in Mankato.

ReadingThe players helped the young readers select books, read with the Roosevelt students, and stressed the importance of reading and a good education. Mandy Reuter, junior outside hitter from Orono, MN said “I had a blast. These kids were eager to listen and learn.”

Jill Randall, sophomore outside hitter from White Bear Lake, MN spends her summers teaching gymnastics to young gymnasts. She remarked “It’s important to balance education and sports. I enjoy teaching gymnastics but this was fun too.

That sentiment was echoed by Dana Ostertag, sophomore outside hitter from Oshkosh, WI. “As an education major, I know that reading is the ticket for these kids” said Ostertag.

Of course, none of the players or students complained about the ice cream they shared after the reading. “It’s all about balance” said freshman Jenn Green, Waverly, IA as she gulped down another helping of ice cream.
