Playing the No. 3 ranked team in the nation - on the road - can be a challenging task. But that was the challenge handed to the Minnesota State volleyball team Tuesday night in St. Paul. MSU head coach Dennis Amundson knew his Mavs had their work cut out for them against Concordia-St. Paul.
The first match wasn't as precise or as perfectly executed as either team would have liked, but the Golden Bears took the first win with a score of 30-20. Ashley Nachreiner hit her way to 16 kills and two attempts in the first game while Cassie Wolpern knocked down three kills but had 22 attempts.
The next two games were played at a fast pace and the Golden Bears won them both, by scores of 30-23 and 30-21, respectively, sweeping the Mavs in a little more than an hour. Setter Stef Sandstrom used her defensive skill to tally 25 assists and three kills as well as the earning a team-best 10 digs.
"We knew this team was a tough team," said Mavericks outside hitter Mandy Reuter. "We didn't play up to our potential. Now we know the things we need to work on for the next game."
The women return to Mankato for their first home match of the season against Nebraska-Omaha Saturday at the Taylor Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
