On May 15 of 2008 Minnesota State announced that Peter McGahey has been named the head soccer coach of the women's soccer program.
The former assistant coach for the South Dakota State women's soccer program, McGahey becomes just the third head coach in the history of the Minnesota State soccer program.
"We are excited about Peter joining us as our new head soccer coach," said Kevin Buisman, MSU Athletic Director. "He was very impressive during the interview process and brings with him an interesting blend of professional experiences. A solid foundation has already been established within our program, and we hope that that a fresh perspective and Coach McGahey's background will allow us to move forward and achieve an even higher level of future success."
McGahey, 34, spent a year as the assistant coach for South Dakota State women's soccer team. During their 2007 campaign, McGahey helped guide the Jackrabbits to a 9-4-4 overall record with a 5-1-2 record in their first season as a member of the Summit League.
Before joining the SDSU soccer program, McGahey served as the assistant coach for Central Oklahoma from February 2004 through July 2005. As the assistant coach, McGahey helped lead the Bronchos to the Lone Star Conference regular season championship in the fall of 2004 and their first ever All-American.
McGahey, who along with Dr. Peter Pierro, wrote, "The Soccer Coach's Guide to Working with Players and Parents," published in January 2004, also served as the assistant coach for Metropolitan State (Denver) from July 1997-May 1999. During his time with Metro State, McGahey identified and aided with the recruiting of goalkeeper Eric Butler, who is the all-time leader in wins, (29), shutouts, (18) and goals against, (1.19). McGahey helped develop Jerod Zannon who finished second on the all-time list for goals (39), third on the team in points, (86), and tied for econd game-winning goals (9).
From May 2005-April 2007, McGahey served as the Technical Director for the Colorado Fusion Soccer Club. As the Technical Director, McGahey played a leading role in the merger of the Denver Soccer Club and the Colorado Sting FC, which resulted in the club's player increase from 2,400 to 5,000 youth players. He also developed and implemented fund raising effort and managed a club budget of $800,000.
From August 2001 to August 2005, McGahey served as the State Director of Coaching and Player Development for the Oklahoma Soccer Association. During his stint in Oklahoma City he led the technical programs for approximately 40,000 youth players and led the state level Olympic Development Program. He also led State Coaching Education programs as well as led and developed other important programs for the association.
From November 1993-August 2001, McGahey served as the Director of Advanced Coaching, Assistant Club Coach, Team Head Coach of the Denver Soccer Club and Club Denver. He began as a 'B' team coach in 1993 and was appointed a full-time professional technical staff coach in 1997.
In addition to his club and college soccer coaching experience, McGahey has served US Youth Soccer in a number of ways including as a Regional Staff Coach from 1998-present as well as National Instructional Staff member from 2002-present.
McGahey played four seasons of men's varsity soccer for the University of Denver from 1992-1996, where he received his bachelors degree in Communications. He would then go on to earn his Masters in Physical Education at Ball State in 2005.
A native of Denver, Colo., McGahey and his wife Dawn, have two children - Ella and Will.
