Minneapolis, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women’s tennis team concluded the 2009 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament Sunday afternoon with a strong show in singles play.
Senior #1 singles player Marina Bugaenco (23-1) won the championship at the No. 1 singles flight with a come-from-behind victory over Augustana’s Brittany Gaster, 3-6, 6-1, 10-5. Bugaenco opened the event with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 victories before advancing to the finals.
In the #2 singles flight, sophomore Sarah Madigan (12-13) finished second. Madigan earned a bye in the first round and then won her second and third sets before falling to St. Cloud State’s Dawn Olsen, ranked #14 in the region, 6-1, 6-2 in the finals.
At #3 singles, junior Paige Burke (11-13) won her first two matches before falling to SCSU’s Kelly Freese in the semifinals. In the third-place match, Burke fell to Bemidji State’s Farrah Steinke, 7-5, 6-2, and finished fourth.
Junior Cassandra Anderson (13-11) went 1-1 on the day and did not place at #4 singles.
Sophomore Heather Jensen (14-10) finished third in the event as she won her first two matches before falling to UMD’s Kelly Rosngren, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals. Jensen then rebounded to defeat Northern State’s Jessica DesLauries, 6-2, 6-2 in the third-place match.
At #6 singles, freshman Carly Hiedeman (7-7) finished third as well as she won her first two matches before losing to St. Cloud State’s Samantha Boushek, 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals. In the third-place match, Hiedeman grinded out a 7-5, 6-4 win over Nicole Henry of Upper Iowa.
Minnesota State (12-10) opens the NCAA Central Region tournament Friday afternoon against Montana State Billings at 1 p.m., at the Sartell High School Tennis Courts in Sartell, Minn.
