Mavericks To Open Play In NCAA Regional Championships

What Lies Ahead: The Minnesota State women's tennis team, ranked #4 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional poll travels to Sartell, Minn., this weekend for the 2009 NCAA Central Region tennis championships. All matches will be played at the Sartell High School Tennis Courts.

The Mavericks open the two-day long event against Montana State University - Billings, a squad which beat MSU 5-4 on March 5. The winner of the match will go onto face St. Cloud State Saturday at 1 p.m., the loser will see its season end.

What Just Happened: The Maverick women participated in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Individual Championships last weekend in Minneapolis, Minn. Senior #1 singles player Marina Bugaenco won the event while sophomore Sarah Madigan finished second at the #2 flight. Junior Paige Burke finished fourth at #3 singles and sophomore Heather Jensen and freshman Carly Hiedeman finished third at #5 and #6 singles, respectively.

In doubles play, Bugaenco and Madigan finished first at #1 doubles while Burke and Jensen were third at #2 doubles and Hiedeman and Anderson were third at #3 doubles.

Rankings: The Mavericks are ranked #4 in the region. Senior #1 singles player Marina Bugaenco is ranked #1 in the region and #35 in the nation. The doubles tandem of Bugaenco and sophomore Sarah Madigan is ranked #4 in the region.

Marina Bugaenco Notes:
Ranked #1 in the region and #35 in the nation in the latest ITA Regional Poll...Won the #1 singles flight at the 2009 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament...Was named the NSIC Player of the Year and named to the First-Team All-NSIC...Joined sophomore doubles player Sarah Madigan to win the NSIC title at the #1 flight...Was named First-Team All-NSIC Doubles...Has played to a 23-1 record this spring with all matches at the #1 flight...Has won her last 16 matches...Owns a 4-0 record against regionally ranked opponents...Has shutout an opponent in 16 sets this year....During one stretch this spring she didn't allow an opponent to win a game in five of six sets....Has dropped just three sets all season...Three-time NSIC Player of the Week.

Sarah Madigan Notes:
Named Honorable Mention All-NSIC for singles play...Finished second in the 2009 NSIC Individual Championships for the #2 singles flight...Joined doubles partner Marina Bugaenco on the First-Team All-NSIC Doubles squad...Has played to a 12-13 record this season...Owns a 7-5 record at the #2 flight and a 3-7 record at the #3 flight...Is 7-3 in her last 10 matches...Owns a 3-4 record in matches decided by a super tiebreaker...Has shut out her opponent in seven sets.

Paige Burke Notes: Finished third at the 2009 NSIC Individual Championships in the #3 singles flight...Owns a 11-13 record the season...Is 5-5 at the #3 flight and 4-6 at the #4 flight...Has won four of her last six matches...Has won three matches this season by a 6-0, 6-0 margin...Has played at the #3 flight for the last 10 matches.

Cassandra Anderson Notes:
Did not place at last weekend's NSIC Individual Championships...Owns a 13-11 record on the season...Is 5-7 at the #4 flight and 7-3 at the #5 flight...Since moving from the #5 flight to the #4 flight she is 3-7.

Heather Jensen Notes: Finished third at last weekend's NSIC Individual championships with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jessica DesLauries of Northern State in the third-place match...Owns an 13-11 record on the season...Is 7-4 at the #5 flight and 4-6 at the #6 flight..Is 7-3 in her last 10 matches...Was named the NSIC Player of the Week on March 16.

Carly Hiedeman Notes: Finished third at last weekend's NSIC Individual championships with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Upper Iowa's Nicole Henry in the third-place match...Owns a 7-7 record this season with all of her matches at the #6 singles flight...Had a season-high two-match winning streak earlier this year.

Bugaenco/Madigan Doubles Notes:
Ranked #4 in the Central Region...Named First-Team All-NSIC Doubles...Own a 15-8 record this season...Won last weekend's NSIC Individual Championship at the #1 doubles flight...The duo have played 23 matches together, more than any other doubles combo on the team...In team play, the duo owns a 12-8 record, all at #1 doubles...Are 8-2 in their last 10 matches...Have played together for all but one match...Have shut out four opponents this season...Ranked #5 in the latest ITA Region poll.

Burke/Jensen Doubles Notes:
Finished third at last weekend's NSIC Individual Championships in the #2 doubles flight...Have played together for 20 matches this season and own a 6-5 record at #2 doubles and a 4-1 record at #3 doubles...As a duo they own a 13-7 record...Have won six of their last eight matches....Are 1-0 in super tiebreakers this season.

Hiedeman/Anderson Doubles Notes:
Finished third at the #3 doubles flight at last weekend's NSIC Individual Championships...Own a 6-8 record at #3 doubles...Have played to a 2-2 record in their last four matches.

After This: If Minnesota State wins the Central Region #1 it will play the winner of the Central Region #2 next weekend. That region consists of Nebraska-Kearney, Metro State and host Mesa State.
