Maverick Swimmers Fall To UW-Eau Claire

Eau Claire, Wis. — The Minnesota State men's swimming and diving team opened the 2009-10 campaign with a 134-109 loss to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Friday evening.
The Mavericks finished with seven first-place finishes in the dual and recorded 23 top-five finishes.
In the relays, MSU won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:32.91. The relay team consisted of junior Jacob Longacre, sophomore Dan Feltt, freshman Paul Pallardy and senior Brian Parks. MSU also turned in a third-place finish in the race with a time of 1:35.80. That team consisted of junior John Powers freshman Sam Heidelk, freshman Paul Creger and senior Jose Rosales. In the 200-yard medley relay, MSU finished second and third with times of 1:41.43 and 1:43.16. The second-place team was made up of freshman Kyle Hellyer, Parks, sophomoreMatt Chida and Longacre. The third-place team consisted of freshman Keaton Brown, freshman Shane Bjork, sophomore Dan Wright and freshman Tom Gasnick.
Individually, Brown won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.87, while Gasnick won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of :22.51 and the 100-yard freestyle (:49.12). Chida claimed the 100-yard butterfly in :54.29, while Hellyer won the 100-yard backstroke in :56.27. Parks rounded out the individual winners with a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.29.
Other top-five finishes include: Chida (second, 50-yard freestyle, :23.02), Longacre (fourth, 50-yard freestyle, :23.14), Hellyer (third, 200-yard individual medley, 2:08.32), Bjork (fourth, 200-yard individual medley, 2:11.36; third, 100-yard breaststroke, 1:06.36), Creger (fifth, 200-yard individual medley, 2:16.96;l fourth, 100-yard backstroke, 1:00.85), Rosales (third, 100-yard butterfly, :57.73; second, 500-yard freestyle, 5:04.11), Wright (fourth, 100-yard butterfly, :58.45), Brown (second, 100-yard freestyle, :49.97), Pallardy (fourth, 100-yard freestyle, :53.04), Powers (fourth, 500-yard freestyle, 5:16.07) and freshman Tyler Jaeger (fifth, three-meter dive, 105.75).
Minnesota State (0-1) opens the home portion of its schedule Friday, Nov. 6 with a home duel against Gustavus at 5 p.m.
