Mankato, Minn. --- Head coach Matt Magers has announced the individual honors for the 2009 season for the Minnesota State baseball team

Selected as MSU’s Most Valuable Player was senior third baseman Geno Glynn.  Glynn, who was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 43rd round (1,309th overall) in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, was an All-NSIC Second Team selection in 2009.  The Waseca, Minn., native hit .376 with eight home runs and had a team-high 58 runs batted in. His 58 RBI rank second on MSU’s all-time single-season list.  Named to the 2009 NSIC All-Tournament Team, Glynn hit .545 (12-for-22) with nine runs scored, two home runs and 10 RBI in five games at this year’s tourney and was named the tournament’s MVP.  For his two-year MSU career, Glynn hit .347 with 10 homers and 82 RBI.

Named Most Valuable Pitcher for 2009 was senior reliever Nathan Kafka.  A 2009 ABCA/Rawlings First Team All-Central Region selection, the Denmark, Wis., native finished the year with a 6-2 record and in 24 appearances totalled 33.2 innings, 35 strikeouts, seven walks and a team-high six saves. Kafka, whose 24 appearances rank third on MSU’s all-time single-season list, led the Mavericks with a 3.21 earned run average. Earlier this year Kafka also picked up All-NSIC First Team and Daktronics Second Team All-Region honors.

The Top Freshman award went to outfielder/DH Ben Kincaid.  Named Daktronics All-Central Region Second Team, Kincaid (Eau Claire, Wis.) finished second on the team in batting (.379), was fourth in slugging (.532) and second in on base percentage (.463).  He was named NSIC Player of the Week April 6, 2009 after going 4-for-7 in two games against SW Minnesota State.

Senior outfielder Corey LaPlante garnered was named MSU’s Most Improved Player.  The Champlin, Minn., native hit .312 with seven homers, 30 runs batted in and six stolen bases.

Earning the team’s Spirit Award was senior righthanded pitcher Matt Franke (Kasson, Minn.)  Franke saw action in four games as a senior and finished with a 1-0 won-loss record.

Senior second baseman Jay Bresnahan (Edina, Minn.) took home MSU’s Iron Man Award.  Bresnahan, who saw action in all 55 games in 2009, led the Mavericks in hitting with a .380 mark and finished his four-year MSU career with a .366 mark. A ABCA/Rawlings All-Central Region Second Team selection in 2009, Bresnahan also led the Mavericks in on base percentage (.484), runs scored (58), and walks (35) as a senior. He completed his career with 202 hits, which ranks second all-time at MSU. He was also named All-NSIC First Team and Daktronics Second Team All-Region in 2009.

Selected as team captains for 2010 are junior catcher Steven Helget (Mankato, Minn.), senior pitcher Patrick Lenton (Maple Grove, Minn.) and junior outfielder Danny Miller (Eden Prairie, Minn.).

Under the direction of Magers, who was in his first season as head coach last year, Minnesota State went 38-17 overall, captured the NSIC tournament title and earned a spot in the NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament.

The Mavericks are slated to open the 2010 campaign Feb. 19 at Colorado Christian in Lakewood, Colo.
