Mankato, Minn. — Minnesota State softball coach
Lori Meyer has announced the signing of Kelly Wood to a national letter of intent to join the Maverick softball team in the fall of 2010.
All signings are contingent upon admission to MSU and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification by the NCAA Clearinghouse.
Wood – who is a catcher – is a three-year letterwinner for Eagan and was the team's Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year en route to earning all-conference, all-section and all-state honors. This past year, Eagan was the 3AAA Regional champions.
Wood batted .388 and slugged .585 last year with four home runs and 16 RBI. She also boasted a perfect fielding percentage. In 2008, Wood batted .373 and slugged .720 to go with 16 RBI and five home runs. The five home runs established a new single-season school record.
"Kelly is a very focused softball player who has a great work ethic, great attitude and love for the game," said Meyer. "She has a quick release for a catcher and the personality and ability to work with pitchers and is a fierce competitor. She has had the opportunity to play all over the country against very good competition which has allowed her to continue to develop into a very good softball player. Kelly is also a great student in the classroom and has also been involved in various community service activities such as being a Sunday school instructor and volunteers with Feed My Starving Children and volunteers with her school."
Minnesota State finished the 2009 season with a 39-17 record.
