Several Mavericks Place in Top-10 At Border Battle

Stevens Point, Wis. – The Minnesota State men’s swimming and diving team finished fourth in the two-day long Border Battle hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.  The Mavericks totaled 546 points in the event, while UW-Milwaukee won the event with 949 points.

Individually, Minnesota State saw several swimmers turn in top-10 finishes.

Freshman Tom Gasnick was fifth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.32 and touched ninth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of :49.29.  Senior Brian Parkswas fourth in the 10-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.73 and finished third in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:14.19.  Sophomore Matt Chida was seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.59 and was sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:19.38.  Chida was also sixth in the 200-yard fly with time of 2:03.37. Freshman Kyle Hellyerturned in a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of :57.10 and finished eighth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:02.93.  Freshman Shane Bjork finished seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:19.58 and freshman Keaton Brown was sixth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.90.  Senior Chris Gogel was sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:19.38.

In the relays, MSU finished fifth in the 800-yard freestyle with a time of 7:31.57.  That relay team was composed of Gogel, Brown, Hellyer and sophomore Dan Wright.  The 400-yard freestyle team was fifth with a time of 3:16.01. 

Minnesota State hosts St. Cloud State next weekend. The diving portion of the meet will take Friday night, while the swimming portion of the meet will commence on Saturday.
