Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State Mavericks opened up their season at Taylor Center with a victory over Dana College, 85-30.
The win marks the 10th consecutive season-opener victory in program history and the 73rd victory at the Taylor Center.
The Mavericks opened up the game with a 24 point lead with seven minutes and 29 seconds remaining in the first half. Minnesota State used a 15-4 run to finish the first half with the lead, 50-14. The key scorers in the first half were, senior guard
Tiffany Moe and freshman forward
Ali Wilkinson, both posting 10 points.
MSU continued to pull away in the second half, starting it off with a three-point field goal by sophomore guard
Jennie Noreen. Moe led all scorers with 15 points on 9-14 shooting and passed out a game-high seven assists. Freshman guard
Sarah Wiens added 13 points while Wilkinson scored 12 tallying 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.
Minnesota State owned the boards, outrebounding Dana by a 49-40 margin, including 17-13 on the offensive side. MSU scored 31 points off the bench with 12 fast-breaks and 36 points in the paint.
Minnesota State (1-0) hosts the Pepsi Tip-Off next weekend. The Mavericks open the four-team, two-day tournament Friday evening against Grand View. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
