Mankato, Minn. — Minnesota State softball coach
Lori Meyer has announced the signings of
Christina Redd and
Katelyn Bakey to national letters of intent to join the Maverick softball team in the fall of 2010. The duo joins
Kelly Wood,
Brittany Lauterbach,
Lindsay Erickson and
Kristen Fah as preps who have signed national letters of intent to join MSU.
All signings are contingent upon admission to MSU and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification by the NCAA Clearinghouse.
Redd and Bakey are both teammates at Valley High School in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Redd – who is an outfielder – is a three year letter winner and has helped Valley to two state championships and a third-place finish during her prep career. For her career, she owns a .330 batting average and has stolen 18 of 20 basses. A a junior she was named Second-Team All-CIML and has also ran in track and field for Valley.
"Christina comes from a very strong softball program at Valley High School and has a great upside as a left handed hitter and outfielder," said Meyer. "She has great speed from the left side of the plate and has the potential to be a triple threat at the plate as she is continuing to grow and learn as slapper and base runner. As an outfielder she possesses great range and a good arm."
Bakey – who is an infielder – is a four-year letter winner in softball at Valley and has helped the school win two state championships and one third-place finish. She owns a .326 career batting average and a .502 career slugging percentage while scoring 58 runs, and driving in 49. Over here career she has 17 doubles, a triple and seven home runs. She is also a four-year Valley Academic letterwinner and has lettered in basketball, volleyball.
"Katelyn will provide us with depth in the middle infield positions," said Meyer. "She can really play any infield position and gives us lots of versatility as an infielder. She is very solid defensively, she has a strong arm and good range and she has a great understanding of the game. You can tell she is a coaches daughter as she has a very mature demeanor on the field. Offensively, she will only get better."
"We are very excited to have two players join us from the Valley program," added Meyer. "The program has a very good reputation for athletic success in the state of Iowa. Having played under Coach Bakey, these two players have been allowed the opportunity to develop and become very good softball players and also very good students and people."
Minnesota State finished the 2009 season with a 39-17 record.
