Minnesota State to Host Pepsi Tip-Off

Looking Ahead: The Mavericks kick-off the ninth Pepsi Tip-Off tourament in program history.  Friday MSU battles Grand View at 6 p.m., then will take on Waldorf Saturday at 6 p.m.

What’s in a Win:
A win on Friday would mark the 565th win in program history and the fifth victory over Grand View...It would be the eighth consecutive victory for the Mavericks...It would improve MSU’s record to 15-3 in the Pepsi Tip-Off...It would also mark MSU’s eighth straight win in the event...A win would be the 74th at Taylor Center and fifth consecutive home victory.

MSU-Grand View Notables:
This will be the sixth match-up between the two teams. MSU is 4-1 against Grand View. The last match-up between the two teams came in 1987 when the Mavericks defeated the Vikings, 72-59. The one loss MSU experienced against Grand View was during the 1985-86 season when the Mavericks were defeated by two points, 80-78.

Viking Views: Grand View is located in Des Moines, Iowa and are a part of the Midwest Collegiate Conference in the NAIA league. The Vikings currently hold a record of 5-2 overall. In the 2009 Midwest Collegiate Conference preseason poll the Vikings were ranked third.
Last year, Grand View finished with a 23-9 overall record and a 13-3 MCC record. The Vikings made it to the semifinal round of the MCC tournament and lost to Mount Mercy College, 62-55. Head coach Garey Smith is in his ninth season with the program. He is assisted by Sarah Francis, Brent Walker, and Tanna Slings. 

Warrior Ways:
Waldorf college is located in Forest City, Iowa and are also a part of the Midwest Collegiate Conference in the NAIA league. The Warriors currently hold a 2-4 overall record and return four starters, losing only one from last season.
Last year, Waldorf finished with a 14-17 overall record. The Warriors lost in the first round of the MCC tournament, 83-64.

MSU-Waldorf Notables:
Saturday’s game marks the first match-up between the two schools.

All-Time:
The 2009-10 season marks the 45th year of women’s basketball as a varsity sport at Minnesota State. MSU currently holds a 564-508 (.526) and has made three NCAA Tournament Appearances in 1986, 2008 and 2009.

Who We Are:
According to official University guidelines, there are only three acceptable usages of the school name. The first official acceptable name is “Minnesota State University, Mankato” and is to only be used on the first reference of the school. Following that, the only other acceptable usages of the school name are “Minnesota State,” or “MSU” and no others.
