Victory in 200 Freestyle Relay Propels MSU to Win

Mankato, Minn. —  The Minnesota State 200-yard freestyle relay team tapped the wall two one-hundreths of a second faster than the Gustavus Adolphus relay team in the evenings final race, securing a dramatic 119-117 victory for Minnesota State.

The relay team, which is made up of sophomore Daniel Wright, freshman Keaton Brown, junior Chris Gogeland junior Jacob Longacre finished the race in 1:31.14, just ahead of GAC's squad which finished in 1:31.16.  The Mavericks entered the final leg of the race trailing by three tenths of a second.  Longacre swam a :22.42 in the final leg turn the deficit into a victory.

In the other relays of the night, MSU won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:38.66.  That relay team was made up of freshman Kyle Hellyer, senior Brian Parks, sophomore Matt Chida and freshman Tom Gasnick.  The Mavericks also finished third in the race with a time of 1:43.38.  That relay team was made up of Longacre, freshman Shane Bjork, Wright and freshman Brody Heggerston.  In the 200-yard freestyle, the relay team of sophomore Dan Felt, junior John Powers, freshman Sam Heidelk and freshman Paul Creger finished fourth in 1:35.89.

Individually, Parks won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke.  In the 50, Parks touched in :22.22, while he  touched in 1:00.29 in the breaststroke.  Sophomore Matt Chida won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:01.01, while Gasnick won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of :48.7.

Other Mavericks finishing in the top-five included:  senior Jose Rosales (third, 1,000-yard freestyle, 10:43.36; fourth, 100-yard butterfly, :56.75; third, 500-yard freestyle, 5:10.02), Powers (fourth, 1,000-yard freestyle, 10:49.15; fourth, 500-yard freestyle, 5:11.13), Gasnick (second, 200-yard freestyle, 1:46.71), Brown (third, 200-yard freestyle, 1:49.10; third, 100-yard backstroke, :57.32), Hellyer, fourth, 200-yard freestyle, 1:51.98; second, 100-yard backstroke, :56.90), Heggerton (second, 50-yard freestyle, :22.91; 100-yard freestyle, :50.73), sophomore Dan Felt (fifth, 50-yard freestyle, :23.41; second one-meter dive, 150.05), Gogel (fifth, 200-yard individual medley, 2:08.80; third, 100-yard breaststroke, 1:04.14), Chida (second, 100-yard butterfly, :53.31), Wright (third, 100-yard butterfly, :53.31),  Bjork (fifth, 100-yard breaststroke, 1:07.06) and freshman Tyler Jaeger (second, three-meter dive, 120.15).

Minnesota State (1-1) travels to the annual Border Battle next weekend hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.  The meet features UWSP, South Dakota and the University of Milwaukee along with MSU.
