MSU Downs Gusties Behind 10 First-Place Finishes

Mankato, Minn. —  The Minnesota State women's swimming and diving team opened the home portion of its 2009-10 campaign with a 141-98 over Gustavus Adolphus Friday evening.

The Mavericks finished with 10first-place finishes in the dual and recorded 30 \top-five finishes.

In the relays, Minnesota State finished first and second in the 200-yard medley relay.  The "A" team finished first touching in 1:49.87.  That team consisted of junior Angela Krych, sophomore Kaitlin Ogden, sophomore Emily Timm and junior Kim Christensen.  The "B" team, which touched in 1:56.46, was made up of junior BrieAnna Simon, junior Adrienne Vida, freshman Tabetha Temperley and sophomore Jessy Stanton.  MSU also finished second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:46.25.  That relay team was made up of sophomore Stefanie Edwards, freshman Alyssa Kuffel, junior Anna Proell and junior Kristin Hayes

Individually, freshman Marissa Reeve won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:49.6  In the race, Reeve turned in her second faster split time in the final leg of the race with a time of :31.56.   Hayes won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.97, while Krych won the 50-yard freestyle in :25.07.  Krych also won the 100-yard freestyle in :54.17.  Timm was the winner in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:17.14 and she also won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.20.  Junior Claire Bergman won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.86 to round out the swimming individual winners.  On the diving board, junior Janel Duffy won the one-meter and three-meter dives with scores of 223.20 and 210.55 respectively.

Also earning top-five finishes were: Freshman Kelsea Smith (fourth, 1,000-yard freestyle 11:35.92), freshman Sarah Iannacone (fifth, 1,000-yard freestyle, 11:36.54), Edwards (third, 200-yard freestyle, 2:02.53), senior Ana Arnold (fourth, 200-yard freestyle, 2:04.47) Proell (fifth, 200-yard freestyle, 2:05.48), junior Chelsea Chapman (second, 50-yard freestyle, :25.13), Christensen (third, 50-yard freestyle, :25.33), Ogden (fifth, 50-yard freestyle, :25.53), Temperley (second, 200-yard individual medley, 2:18.63; third, 100-yard butterfly, 1:04.28), Kuffel (third, 200-yard individual medley, 2:21.53), Simon (fifth, 200-yard individual medley, 2:21.69), Vida (second, 100-yard backstroke, 1:04.11), Reeve (second, 500-yard freestyle, 5:19.46), sophomore Beth Keskey (third, one-meter dive, 177.35; second, three-meter dive, 189.45). 

Minnesota State (1-1) travels to the annual Border Battle next weekend hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.  The meet features UWSP, South Dakota and the University of Milwaukee along with MSU.
