Mavericks Place Four in St. Cloud's Husky Open

St. Cloud, Minn. – Minnesota State sent 15 of its wrestlers to the 2009 Husky Open that was held in St. Cloud, Minn. Saturday, December 12. The Mavericks placed four of their participants.

In the 125-pound weight class, returning All-American Andy Forstner (Madelia, Minn.) opened the day at 125 pounds with a pin-fall victory over Charlie Wilczek. St. Cloud’s Trent Herold was Forstner’s next opponent; Forstner was victorious by decision, 5-2. He then went on to defeat David Demo, fellow Maverick wrestling unattached. In the championship match, Forstner was defeated by Chris Heilman, by tech-fall, 18-3 7:00 into the match.

At 141 pounds, freshman Robbie Fisher (Bloomington, Minn.) began his day with two victories over Jeremy Loch and Tico Baez before heading to the consolation bracket. Fisher defeated Justin Reinsma by major decision, 15-2 and defeated Chad Schultz by decision, 4-0 to earn third-place in the bracket.

In the 157-pound bracket, Maverick Darren Olson (Davis Ill.) began his day with two straight victories before meeting fellow Maverick Justin Turek (New Prague, Minn.) in the third-round. Olson was defeated and sent to the consolation bracket. Olson then rattled off three more victories taking him to the third-place match where he again met teammate Turek. Olson won by forfeit.

Three-time All-American senior Brady Wilson (Fairbault, Minn.) continued his strong early season performance with a first-place finish at heavyweight.  After a 0:32 pin-fall over Josh Koler of RCC to start the day, he topped Carter Ash of Southwest Minnesota State by pin-fall, 3:47 into the match. Wilson earned his third pin-fall of the day in the semi-finals over St. Cloud State’s Chris Brassell 2:12 into the match. In the Championship match, Wilson earned a 1-0 decision over Andy Witzel of Augustana.

The Minnesota State wrestling squad will travel to Reno, Nevada in their next action to participate in the Reno Tournament of Champions, December 20.
