Houston, Texas - The Minnesota State women’s swimming and diving team sits in 10th-place with 28 points after the opening day of the 2009 NCAA Division II Championships. The event, which is held at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium on the campus of the University of Houston, is part of the NCAA Division II Winter Sports Festival.
Wayne State (Mich.) leads the field with 114 points.
In their lone relay of the day, Minnesota State junior Angela Krych, freshmen Kaitlin Ogden and Emily Timm and sophomore Kim Chirstensen turned in a seventh-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:44.81. The quartet swam to a seventh-place finish in the prelims with a time of 1:44.67
Individually, senior Ashley Baer earned All-American status in the 200-yard individual medley with a 13th-place finish of 2:05.67. Baer swam to a 14th-place finish in the prelims touching in 2:06.49.
Other Mavericks competing on Wednesday, but not advancing to the finals were: Timm (200-yard Individual medley, prelim time of 2:11.39, prelim finish of 49th), Christensen (50-yard freestyle, prelim time of :23.94, prelim finish of 22nd), freshman Meagan Pickert (50-yard freestyle, prelim time of :24.21, prelim finish of 33rd), freshman Katie Young (50-yard freestyle, prelim time of :24.40, prelim finish of 41st), Ogden (50-yard freestyle, prelim time of :24.46, prelim finish of 46th), Krych (50-yard freestyle, prelim time of :24.56, prelim finish of 51st) and sophomore Chelsea Chapman (50-yard freestyle, prelim time of :24.80, prelim finish of :63rd).
The four-day long event continues Thursday.
