Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State men’s and women’s teams have both received invitations to compete in the 2009 NCAA Golf Championships.
The Maverick men, the 2009 Northern Sun Intercollegiate champions, are scheduled to compete in the NCAA Central/West Super Regional which will be held in Lincoln, Neb., May 4-6. The top five teams (regardless of region) will advance to the NCAA finals May 19-22 in Blaine, Wash.
The MSU men, who finished fourth at last year’s Central regional, will be making their seventh overall appearance and have now qualified for the NCAA tournament the last four years in a row. MSU is led by junior Kyle Welch (Penticton, B.C.) who has averaged 76.6 strokes per round this spring and senior Jon Herzog (New Ulm, Minn.), who is averaging 76.7.
The Minnesota State women’s golf team will compete at the NCAA Division II Central Regional in Sioux Falls, S.D., May 4-6. The top three teams from each regional will advance to the championship tournament which will be held May 13-16 in Findlay, Ohio.
MSU, which is coming off a fourth-place finish at the recently completed NSIC championship, is making its tenth appearance in the NCAA tournament.
The Mavericks are making their second consecutive appearance at the NCAA tournament having finished tied for third at last year’s regional. MSU is led by junior Jaymie Halvorson (Red Wing, Minn.) who is averaging 82.3 strokes per round this spring and freshman Samantha Bergmann (New Ulm, Minn.), who is averaging 82.7.
