Trio of Mavericks Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District At-Large
Baer, Galiardi and Herzog Earn Second Team Academic Honors From College Sports Information Directors of America
Mankato, Minn. --- A trio of Minnesota State student-athletes have been named 2008-09 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District.
Earning second team honors are senior swimmer Ashley Baer, sophomore men’s hockey forward Rylan Galiardi and senior golfer Jon Herzog.
To be considered for the academic all-district team, which is nominated and voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America, student-athletes must be at least sophomores and have cumulative grade point averages of 3.30.
Ashley Baer, Women’s Swimming, Eden Prairie, Minn. - Elementary Education, 3.60 GPA - Baer leaves Minnesota State as a 13-time All-American including five All-American honors this past season. The owner of eight school records, Baer earned 11 first-place finishes this year in 26 individual races. She qualified for nationals in each of her four years at Minnesota State and as a two-time member of the NCC Commissioner¹s Academic Honor Roll. She was also a Maverick Achievement Award Winner as a senior scholar-athlete.
Rylan Galiardi, Men’s Hockey, Calgary, Alta. - Sport Management, 3.90 GPA - Galiardi, who had four goals and 11 assists for 15 points in the last 16 games of 2008-09, tied for fourth on MSU’s scoring charts with 8-20--28. One of five players to see action in all 38 games, Galiardi ranked third on the team in assists and was third in power play goals (6). A member of the 2008-09 Western Collegiate Hockey Association All-Academic Team, he had three points on a goal and two assists in a 3-1 at Colorado College Jan. 10 and three points on a goal and two assists in a 6-2 win over Minnesota Jan. 30.
Jon Herzog, Men’s Golf, New Ulm, Minn. - Managment, 3.81 GPA - Herzog has been a member of the MSU men’s golf team since the fall of 2006. In 2009 he was named the NSIC Golfer of the Week (9/16/09) and helped the Mavericks win the 2009 NSIC Championship finishing in 15th place with a score of 150/ Named to the NCC Academic At-Large Team in 2008 and a 2007 All-NCC Second Team selection, he was a Maverick Achievement Award recipient as a senior.
