Men's Tennis Team Set To Play In NCAA Regional Championships

What Lies Ahead: The Minnesota State men\'s tennis team will open the 2009 NCAA Central Region championships Friday morning with a match against Western New Mexico. The Mavericks will participate in the two-day, three-team, sub-regional this weekend hosted by St. Cloud State University in Sartell, Minn., at the Sartell High School Tennis Courts.
What Just Happened: The Minnesota State men’s tennis team earned a 9-0 victory over the University of Mary on April 28.
Minnesota State won all three doubles matches. Freshman Marco Vazquez and sophomore Adam Doll won by default at #3 doubles.
MSU also won at the #2 doubles flight as junior Chad Berger and freshman Dan Zastrow earned an 8-0 win, while junior John Julian and freshman Chris Weber won 8-2 at the #1 doubles flight.
In singles action, Zastrow and Doll both won by default. Vazquez was the first Maverick to win a singles match as he downed Sean Borean, 6-0, 6-0, at the #3 flight. Berger won 6-2, 6-1, at the #4 flight over Ben Bawden, while Weber downed Sean Solberg, 6-2, 6-2, at the #1 flight. Julian dropped his first set, 4-6, but rebounded to win 6-1 in the second set and 10-7 in the super tie-breaker to earn the shutout for Minnesota State.
Rankings: The Mavericks enter this weekend\'s NCAA sub-regional ranked #7 in the latest ITA tennis rankings (released May 5). Western New Mexico is ranked #7.
