Mankato, Minn. – Twelfth-ranked Minnesota State picked up four falls and two major decisions to power past the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 41-3 Thursday night. With the non-conference victory, the Mavericks improve to 5-1-0 on the season.
Junior All-American Andy Forstner (Madelia, Minn.) got things going for the Mavericks early with a fall at 125 pounds in just 1:11. Major decision wins by junior Matt Nyvold (Wahpeton, N.D.) at 133 and freshman Robby Fisher (Bloomington, Minn.) at 141 pushed the Maverick advantage to 14-0 before a setback at 149 put UW-Eau Claire on the board for the first and only time of the night.
Senior Justin Turek (New Prague, Minn.) began a string of six straight Maverick victories with a quick fall win in 1:20 at 157 pounds. Sophomore Tel Todd (Bozeman, Mont.) picked up a scrappy 6-2 win at 165 pounds followed by a 10-3 decision from junior Ben Becker (Fort Dodge, Iowa) at 174. Sophomore Aaron Norgren (Good Thunder, Minn.) increased the lead to 32-3 with a second-period fall at 184, followed by a hard-fought 12-6 win from junior John Makabe (Apple Valley, Minn.) at 197. Senior Brady Wilson (Faribault, Minn.) put an emphatic end to the evening, racking up three takedowns in the first minute en route to a fall in just 1:30. He improves to a team-best 18-4 on the season.
The Mavericks continue home action next weekend with a pair of NSIC duals. MSU Moorhead visits on Friday, followed by Augustana on Saturday. Both duals are slated for 7:00 p.m. starts.
