Minnesota State Vaults Eight Spots to #4 in NCAA Division II Poll

1/21/2010 5:38:18 PM

Edmond, Okla.Minnesota State, fresh off a third-place finish at the NWCA National Duals, leapt to #4 in the latest edition of the NCAA Division II National Wrestling Coaches Association poll. The ranking represents an eight-point jump, and coincides with wins over top-25 opponents Western State (then #6), West Liberty (then #13) and Gannon (then #16) in Cedar Falls, Iowa. It also makes the Mavericks the top Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference team in the poll. Upper Iowa is now ranked #6, followed by St. Cloud State at #8 and Augustana at #10.

Individually, two Mavericks maintained the spots they have held most of the season. Senior All-American Brady Wilson (Faribault, Minn.) is once again ranked #1 at heavyweight following a two-week period where he went 5-0 and earned victories over three nationally ranked opponents. Junior All-American Andy Forstner (Madelia, Minn.) is once again ranked #4 at 125 pounds following a 4-1 record in dual action. A third Maverick reappeared in the poll after a short absence. Junior Ben Becker (Fort Dodge, Iowa) is now ranked #8 at 174 pounds. He went 3-1 at the National Duals and earned another victory in the dual against UW-Eau Claire.

Minnesota State continues home dual action this weekend with two NSIC matches. On Friday, the Mavericks entertain MSU Moorhead and Saturday square off with #10 Augustana. Both matches are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Bresnan Arena.
