Fayette, Iowa – Minnesota State won two matches by fall but it was not enough as sixth-ranked Peacocks of Upper Iowa handed the fourth-ranked Mavericks their second straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference loss by a score of 24-18. The Mavericks are now 6-3-0 on the season, 1-2-0 in league action.
The first match of the night set the tone as the Mavericks fourth-ranked Andy Forstner (Madelia, Minn.) and UIU’s sixth-ranked Tyler Mumbolo squared off at 125 pounds, with Mumbolo coming out with a 5-2 win that put the hosts up early. A major decision loss at 133 put the Peacock lead at 5-0 before the Mavericks rattled off three straight wins. At 141 pounds, freshman Robby Fisher (Bloomington, Minn.) dominated #7 Steven Baker en route to a 4-0 win to get Minnesota State on the board. Senior Travis Elg (Mountain Lake, Minn.) gave up the opening takedown in his match with Brett Hakeman but scored a reversal and a fall at 2:18 to give MSU a 9-7 lead.
At 157, senior Justin Turek (New Prague, Minn.) crafted a 5-4 win, pushing the score to 12-7 but Upper Iowa took over from there with four straight wins. The Mavericks almost got within striking distance at 197 pounds. Sophomore Aaron Norgren (Good Thunder, Minn.) bumped up from his traditional 184-pound slot at nearly pulled out a decision, falling 3-2 on a third-period takedown. Senior heavyweight Brady Wilson (Faribault, Minn.) closed the dual with his team-best eighth fall of the season in 4:30 over Arron Cramer.
Minnesota State returns home on Saturday, hosting the University of Mary. That dual begins at 2:00 p.m. at Bresnan Arena.
