Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State sophomore goaltender Phil Cook has been named WCHA Co-Defensive Player of the Week as a result of his outstanding efforts in a two-game home league sweep over the University of Minnesota last weekend.

Cook shares this week’s award with BemidjiState junior goaltender Dan Bakala.

A 6-3, 190-pound native of Wheaton, Ill., Cook stopped a total of 82 of 85 shots for a .965 saves percentage in the two wins as the Mavericks ran their winning streak to four games.

Cook had 33 saves in Friday’s 3-2 victory Friday with 12 of his saves coming on Gopher power play chances, who were held to 0-for-5 in PPGs in the MSU win.  He then turned in a career-high 49 saves in Saturday’s 2-1 victory with five of the saves came on power plays as MSU held UM scoreless in six power play opportunities. The 49 saves by Cook are the most ever by a MSU netminder in WCHA regular-season action and are the most since Des Christopher had 54 saves on 57 shots in a 3-1 loss to Colorado College Dec. 12, 1997 (MSU did not become a member of the WCHA until 1999-2000). Cook has started 11 of the last 12 games for the Mavericks.

Now 6-6-4 overall, the Mavericks host #5 North Dakota Friday and Saturday in a pair of league contests.
