Mankato, Minn. --- By virtue of Winona State’s 80-69 victory over St. Cloud State Saturday evening, the Minnesota State men’s basketball team earned the 2009-10 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Regular Season Championship.
The Mavericks and Huskies entered Saturday tied for the league lead; however Minnesota State downed the University of Mary, 75-63, to earn a share of the title late Saturday afternoon. Sole possession of the title came after the SCSU loss Saturday evening.
The championship marks MSU’s fourth league title (North Central Conference or NSIC) under head coach Matt Margenthaler and is the 17th league title in program history.
Minnesota State opens the 2010 Sanford Health/NSIC Tournament Wednesday evening at 7 p.m., against Southwest Minnesota State, who enters the tournament as the #8 seed. Minnesota State swept the 2009-10 regular-season series.
