Mokaya Double Winner as Mavericks Claim NSIC Championship

Mankato, Minn. – Paced by a steady balance in sprints and distance events, the Minnesota State men’s track team earned its second straight NSIC Championship Saturday afternoon with 165 points, 43 points ahead of MSU Moorhead, which finished in second place.
 
The championship, which was MSU’s second in as many years, was capped off with a pair of awards, as MSU head coach Mark Schuck was named the league’s Coach of the Year for the second straight year, while senior Denise Mokaya was tabbed the Track Athlete of the Year.
Mokaya established a new meet record in the mile as he finished first with a provisional time of 4:14.26.  Senior Jonathan Stoltman was second with a time of 4:15.47.
 
Mokaya also won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.27, while Stoltman won the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:30.00.  Junior Nicholad Ramberg finished second in the 1,000 with a time of 2:31.00
 
Senior Sam Lance won the 400-meter run with a provisional time of :49.18, while junior Adam Endres was fifth in :49.97 and freshman Austin Eliason was sixth in :50.20.
 
A pair of Mavericks scored points in the 600-meter run paced by junior Todd Reed’s second-place finish of 1:22.10.  Freshman Eric Anenson finished fourth in 1:23.09.  In the men’s 200-meter run senior Kelvin Rodgers was second with a provisional time of :21.99.
 
Senior Kelvin Rodgers finished seventh in the men’s 60-meter dash with a time of :07.03, while freshman Edward Van Pelt was eighth in the 800-meter run 2:02.61. 
 
Junior Todd DeJong finished fourth in the weight toss with a throw of 55’7”, while senior Michael Robinson was fifth with a toss of 55’0 ≤”.
 
The 4x400-meter relay team finished first with a provisional time of 3:19.33.  The relay team was made up of Endres, Eliason, freshman Oluday Obilade and senior Sam Lance.
 
Minnesota State returns to action next month in the NCAA Championships held in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
