Mokaya Sets New School Record in the Mile at Ted Nelson Classic

Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State University men’s track and field team hosted the Ted Nelson Classic Saturday, February 6th at Meyers Field House. The Maverick men provided a stellar performance having 30 top-five finishes and eight first place finishes.

In the long jump, dual sport athletes Kelvin Rodgers (23’ 02”) and Chris Nowlin (21’ 08”) placed first and third respectively, while fellow maverick Alex Spielman finished fifth with a leap of 21’ 00 ½”. In the weight throw, Michael Robinson (54’ 01”) captured first place edging out teammate Todd DeJong (49’ 08 ½”) and another maverick, Tyler Velske (45’ 11 ¼”), rounded out the top five with a fifth place finish.

In the shot put, Todd DeJong (50’ 4”), Ross Schulz (48’ 10 ¾”) and Grant Luer (48’ 6”) finished third, fourth and fifth in that order.  Adedayo Ologunde (46’ 00 ¾”) placed second in the triple jump and Jared Van Dorpe (6’ 00 ¾”) brought home third place in the high jump. Two Mavs topped the list in the pole vault with Dan Novak (15’ 11 ¼”) finishing first and Matt Masloski (15’ 05 ½”) finishing second.

In the mile run, Denise Mokaya stole the show breaking his previous school record (4:08:45) with a time of 4:06:61. Jesse Merkel posted a time of 15:39:86 in the 5000-meter run which was good enough to earn him the top spot. Sam Lance (1:04:65) and Andre Endres (1:05:52) dominated the 500-meter run finishing first and second respectively. Cody Good (2:00:82) finished first in the 800-meter run and Eric Anenson (2:31:83) paced his way to first in the 1000-meter run.

The 4x400 meter relay squad finished third posting a time of 3:27:24.

Other Mavericks earning top-five finishes include: Jonathan Stoltman (Second place, 1-mile run, 4:14:16), Jacob Bastyr ( Second place, 5000-meter run, 15:41:60), Alex Spielman (Fifth place, 60-meter hurdles, 8.76), Austin Eliason (Second place, 400-meter hurdles,  50.77), Brady Flies (Fourth place, 400-meter hurdles, 51.50), Scott Lustig ( Fifth Place, 400-meter hurdles, 51.70), Todd Reed (Fourth place, 500-meter run, 1:07:13), Kelvin Rodgers ( Second place, 200-meter dash, 22.24), Emmanuel Asamoa (Third place, 200-meter dash, 22.73), Austin Eliason (Fifth place, 200-meter dash, 22.84).

The men’s track & field team will continue action in Ames, Iowa on February 12.
