Quartet of Mavericks Honored by the NSIC

St. Paul, Minn. --- The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference released its 2009-2010 postseason awards today and the Mavericks were well represented.

Junior wing Jefferson Mason was named the league's Defensive Player of the Year and was also a First-Team All-Conference pick.  During league play, the Crystal, Minn., native led the conference in steals (41), finished third in defensive rebounds (102, 6.80 drpg) and was 11th in blocked shots (15).  Mason averaged 16.1 points per game during the NSIC portion of the schedule and hauled in a team-high 7.9 rebounds.

Joining Mason as a First-Team All-NSIC selection was senior center Travis Nelson (Marion, Iowa).  Nelson led Minnesota State in scoring during league action, averaging 17 points per game while hauling in 5.9 rebounds.  Nelson also blocked 29 shots during conference play and shot 60 percent from the floor.  This marks the second time that Nelson has been named to the First-Team All-NSIC.

Seniors Jesse Clark (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Jermain Davis (Minneapolis, Minn.) were both Second-Team All-NSIC picks.  Clark averaged 7.5 points and 1.5 rebounds during league play, but passed out 75 assists and shot 57.9 percent from the floor.  The reigning national leader in assist-to-turnover ratio, Clark finished second in league play in the category, with a 3.26-1 ratio.  The award represents the second time that Clark has been a Second-Team All-NSIC choice.

Davis was third on the team in scoring, averaging 11.8 points to go with 2.8 rebounds.  He also passed out 50 assists and collected 18 steals during conference action. 

Head coach Matt Margenthaler was named the NSIC Coach of the Year.   The award marks the fourth time in his career that Margenthaler has won a coach of the year award.  While in the North Central Conference, Margenthaler won the award in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Minnesota State owns a 24-4 record and will await its postseason fate which is announced Sunday evening at 8:30 p.m. (CST).
