Mavericks Split With Warriors as Lenton Crafts Gem

Winterhaven, Fla. — The Minnesota State baseball team split a nononconference twin bill Monday with Winona State in a pair of games played in Florida.

The Mavericks dropped a 6-4 decision in the first game before responding with a 3-0 victory in the second game.

Sophomore righthander Ben Kincaid, who went the first five innings of the first game, gave up four earned runs while striking out two and walking two in taking the loss. Junior shortstop Zach Rowles led off the game with a home run and junior catcher Steven Helget was two-for-three with a home run.

Senior righthanded pitcher Patrick Lenton went the distance in earning the complete-game shut-out in the second contest. Lenton struck out eight batters while giving up six hits and did not walk a batter in seven innings. Lenton, who owns a 3-1 mark for 2010, stands 17-4 and has fanned 174 batters for his career. His 17 wins is tied for eighth on the school’s all-time list and his 174 Ks is tied for ninth.

extended his hitting streak to ten games by going two-for-two in the game and Ben Kincaid was two-for-three, including a two-run home run in the win.

Now 8-4 for 2010, the Mavericks are scheduled to play Ashland (Ohio) Tuesday in a single, nine-inning contest in Winterhaven.
