Winterhaven, Fla. — Junior righthanded pitcher Bret Mitchell put on a brilliant display as Minnesota State earned a 6-0 nonconference win over Ashland (Ohio) in Winterhaven, Fla., Tuesday.

Mitchell, who scattered four hits and fanned 11 batters while walking one, went all nine innings in earning his first shut-out as a Maverick. The Lakeville, Minn., native upped is record to 2-2 with the win.

Following three scoreless innings, junior outfielder Danny Miller homered to lead off the fourth inning and Matt Odegaard followed with a two-run double. Senior third baseman Kosuke Hattori, who had three hits in the game, tripled in the fifth before being driven in on a double by sophomore Ben Kincaid. Junior catcher Steven Helget, who was two-for-five in the game, then doubled to knock in Kincaid.

Junior shortstop Zach Rowles, who was two-for-five in today's victory, extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Now 9-4 for 2010, the Mavericks are scheduled to play Lock Haven Wednesday in a single, nine-inning contest in Winterhaven.
