Aberdeen, S.D. --- The Minnesota State women’s tennis team closed the books on the regular season portion of its schedule Saturday with a 9-0 victory over Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Northern State.
The Mavericks opened the match with three victories in doubles play. Junior Sarah Madigan and freshman Kathryn Gavin earned a hard-fought 9-8 (7-5) victory at the #1 flight. Junior Heather Jensen and senior Paige Burke earned an 8-0 win at the #2 flight, while senior Cassandra Anderson and sophomore Tegan Bakke won 8-1 at the #3 position.
In singles play, Burke opened with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the #4 flight and was followed by Anderson who won 6-0, 6-0 at the #6 position. Freshman Brandi Dohmen won 6-0, 6-1 at the #2 slot, while Gavin earned a pair of 6-1 victories at the #3 position.
Jensen – playing #5 singles for the first time all year – kept her perfect NSIC record in tact as she earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory while Madigan closed out the meet with a 6-1, 5-7, 10-5 victory at the top-flight.
Minnesota State (11-11, 6-4 NSIC) will participate in next week’s NSIC Championships at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis. The Mavericks should learn their match time and opponent as early as Sunday evening.
