Minnesota State earned its third consecutive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's golf championship over the weekend.

Mavericks Claim 2011 NSIC Title

Lake City, Minn. — Minnesota State erased a three-stroke deficit to claim the 2010-11 NSIC Men’s Golf Championship.

The Mavericks, who have now won the last three league championships, headed into today's final round needing to make up some ground on tournament leading St. Cloud State and they did that and more to win the tournament played at the Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, Minn. As he has done all year, Minnesota State senior Kyle Bahe led the Mavericks with his second-place finish in the individual competition. The Annandale, Minn., native carded a 72 today to complete the tournament with a total of 360 - four strokes back of Field. Bahe was fourth at last year's league tournament.

The Mavericks shot a fifth-round low 292 today in finishing with a 90-hole total of 1487. St. Cloud State tumbled to third place in the final standings with today's round of 319 giving the Huskies a 1511 total. Wayne State combined to shoot 295 today and finished second at 1508, 21 strokes behind the first-place Mavericks in the ten-team field.

Wayne State's Adam Field claimed medalist honors as he carded a 90-hole total of 356 in finishing +1 for the championship.

Other Mavericks include sophomore Kyle Thul (77-73-76-76-76=378), who tied for seventh and junior Julian Ramirez (81-80-78-71-75=384), who finished 13th. Sophomore Greg Werner, who did not compete in the first two rounds in the fall, totalled has 232 for the last three rounds, as did junior Curtis Guidl.

The Mavericks receive an automatic bid to the NCAA West/Central Regional played May 2-4 at the Championships Course at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, N.M. The NCAA DII Men’s Golf Championships follow May 16-20 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals in Florence, Ala.
