Maverick Walk for Women's Scholarships Saturday

4/5/2011 9:36:23 AM

Mankato, Minn. ---   The Seventh Annual Maverick Walk for Women’s Scholarships is scheduled to take place Saturday, April 9th in Myers Field House at Minnesota State University.

The Walk,  scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m., with registration and related activities, serves as a fundraising event dedicated towards raising scholarships for female student-athletes at Minnesota State and this year’s presenting sponsor for the event is Hy•Vee of Mankato.

Each Walker (participant), whether they participate on a team or as an individual, who raises $50 will receive a free Walk shirt, opportunities at gift cards and other door prizes. Once registered, Walkers can meet the Maverick teams, play interactive games (kids are welcome) and enjoy free samples and services from a variety of sponsors.

All participants will also enjoy a free breakfast courtesy of Hy•Vee. Mankato Clinic  will also again be presenting “Healthy You” activities at the Walk (i.e. glucose testing, blood pressure testing, etc).

Through participant pledges and corporate sponsorship  the event has raised nearly $400,000 for women’s scholarships in the last six years.

Cynthia Frederick, the owner/operator of the Electric Beach Mankato Tanning Salon and a long-time partner with MSU Athletics personally and through her business., is serving as this year’s honorary chair of the event.

“The goal of the Maverick Walk is to raise money for women’s scholarships,” says Frederick. “The MSU Athletic Department has 12 women’s teams and over 300 female athletes. Giving female student-athletes the opportunity for both a great education and high quality athletic competition comes at a cost. Since the State of Minnesota provides no scholarship assistance, the Athletic Department must raise these dollars through events and sponsorships. By participating in the Walk, you are giving a gift to female student-athletes. Females with the drive to excel in life and the desire to compete athletically can accomplish both goals with your help.”

Women’s teams at Minnesota State compete in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, and there are currently 293 student-athletes on MSU’s 12 female teams.
