Mavericks to Test Saints

On Tap:    Minnesota State (5-14-1 overall, 2-11-1 WCHA) resumes regular-season action with a two-game nonconference road series at St. Lawrence (7-10-2 overall, 4-5-0 ECAC) this weekend.  The Mavericks and the Saints play this Friday and Saturday in Canton, N.Y., with a 7:00 p.m. (EST) face-off scheduled for both nights.

About the MSU-SLU Series:   The Mavericks and the Saints met for the first time last year in a pair of games played in Mankato to open the 2010-11 season.  The two teams played to two overtime ties (5-5 and 1-1) in the games played at Verizon Wireless Center in the only meetings between the two schools.

Most Recently:  Minnesota State enters the New Year standing 5-14-1 overall and 2-10-1 WCHA.

The Mavericks, who fell twice to Colorado College (2-1 in overtime and 6-2) Dec. 16 and 17 in its last regular-season action prior to the holidays, hosted the U.S. U18 team on Dec. 30 where the two teams battled to a 3-3 overtime tie in exhibition action. The Mavericks got goals from sophomore forward Corey Leivermann, freshman forward Matt Leitner and junior forward Eriah Hayes in the contest and MSU’s three netminders - Austin Lee, Phil Cook and Evan Karembelas combined for 27 saves in the game.
 
About St. Lawrence:  St. Lawrence stands 7-10-2 overall and is 4-5-0 in ECAC games on the year.  The Saints last played Dec. 30 and 31 when they participated in the Ledyard National Bank Classic in which it gained a 6-6 tie with Merrimack before tying Dartmouth, 2-2, and then winning the championship game in the shoot-out. 

Junior forward Kyle Flanagan, who was named tournament MVP after tallying six points in two games last weekend, leads St. Lawrence in scoring with 9-10--19 in 11 games.  Sophomore forward Greg Carey has 3-12--15 in 19 games and freshman forward Chris Martin owns 7-6--13 in 19 games.

Sophomore goaltender Matt Weninger (6-9-2, 3.00, .896), has started 17 of 19 games for the Saints this season.

Head  coach Joe Marsh is in his 27th season at the St. Lawrence men’s hockey helm.
