Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State mourns the passing of baseball coaching legend,
Jean McCarthy.
McCarthy passed away early Wednesday morning following a lengthy battle with cancer.

The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the MSU Athletic Scholarship fund via the McCarthy Family Foundation.
McCarthy skippered the MSU baseball program from 1964 to 1976 and during that 13-year span guided his teams to a 250-127 record for a .663 winning percentage. MSU earned six conference titles under McCarthy - two in the Northern Intercollegiate Conference (1968 & 1969) and four in the North Central Conference (1970, 1971, 1974, and 1976). His teams earned seven trips to NCAA Division II post-season play, captured one regional championship and his 1971 squad finished fourth at the national tournament.
A four-time
NCC Coach of the Year, McCarthy was named
NCAA District V Coach of the year in 1971. He had five different teams ranked in the top 15 nationally and 13 players signed professional contracts.
One of his MSU players,
Jerry Terrell, spent eight years in the majors. McCarthy produced forty all-conference players, 14 All-District players and one First Team Academic All-American. He was inducted into the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993.
