Mankato, Minn.--- The Minnesota State men's track and field team opened up its season as it hosted the Chuck Peterson Pre-Season Open on Saturday. Other teams in competition included Augustana, University of Sioux Falls, Concordia University, Winona State University, and Dakota State University.
In the 60-meter hurdles senior
Powell Slater took the top spot finishing with a provisional qualifying time of 8.18. Coming in third-place for the Purple and Gold was freshman
Benjamin Ojika crossing the finish line in 8.30 which also meets the provisional qualifying standard.
Senior
Carmono Lane and junior
Anthony Gustafson both sprinted their way into the finals of the 60-meter dash with times of 7.03 and 7.12 respectively. In the final's Lane finished fourth with a time of 6.96 while Gustafson finished fifth with a time of 7.07.
MSU took the top two spots in the 200-meter dash. Gustafson finished in first-place with a time of 22.27 while Lane took the second spot crossing the finish line with a time of 22.28.
Senior
Chris Reed broke his own school record he set last year in the shot put by over two feet with a booming toss of 61-7.75 feet en route to a first place finish. Freshman Bryan Caffin took third with a throw of 50-02.00 feet.
In the triple jump the Mavericks took the top four spots. Sophomore
Jor'dan Khalil finished in first-place (14.80m), senior
David Pearcill took second (14.56m), Ojika placed third (14.00m), and freshman
Frank Veldman took fourth (13.76m).
Competing and finishing second in the high jump for MSU was Veldman with a leap of 2.04-meters. Coming in third-place was fellow freshman
Benjamin Ojika leaping 1.96-meters.
Reed had a throw of 18.85-meters in the weight throw taking the top spot in that event.
