Pucks for Paws Set for Friday at Men's Hockey

21374  Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State Athletics is teaming up with Blue Earth Nicollet County Humane Society (BENCHS) and Athletes for Animals to create awareness and raise funds at the Maverick men's hockey game vs. Alabama-Huntsville Friday at Verizon Wireless Center.

Athletes for Animals is a nonprofit organization consisting of a united team of professional athletes with a shared passion for rescuing and protecting the welfare of homeless pets nationwide. Athletes for Animals was founded by former Minnesota State captain David Backes and his wife Kelly and the organization's website is located HERE.

Backes, who serves as captain for the National Hockey League's St. Louis Blues, completed his MSU career with 46 goals and 73 assists for 119 points in 115 games from 2003-06. The Blaine, Minn., native was member of the 2004-05 All-WCHA Third Team and the 2003-04 WCHA All-Rookie Team. A 2005-06 RBK Second Team All-American, the two-time WCHA All-Academic selection ranks 23rd on MSU's all-time scoring list, was a two-time team MVP and is a two-time team scoring champion. Backes graduated from MSU in 2013 with a degree in organizational studies.


    BENCHS will be selling raffle tickets for $10 on Friday night to win prizes including:

        • Signed St. Louis Blues authentic David Backes sweater
        • Signed David Backes game stick
        • Two signed David Backes mini sticks
        • Two signed David Backes photos
        • Gift bag from Athletes for Animals (includes hat, men's t-shirt, women's t-shirt)

The first 2,000 fans will also recieve a Backes poster and 200 of the posters are signed by David Backes.
