Hunter’s Record Day Guides the Mavericks at the Chuck Petersen Open

MANKATO, Minn. --- In the first meet of the season, the Mavericks set the tone early through sophomore Myles Hunter.

In the preliminary round of the 60-meter hurdles, Hunter broke Adrian Stuart's 2004 school record of 7.93 by bounding to a 7.91 time. In the finals of the event, he went at it again improving the mark to 7.76. Freshman Zecheriah Copeland would find success as well finishing in third-place with a time of 8.56. In today's effort, Hunter has already qualified for the Divison II Indoor Championships as an automatic qualifier.

Success would run wild throughout the day as numerous Mavericks topped the charts. Kyran Stewart and Richard Wilhite finished first and third in the 60-meter dash with times of 6.83 and 6.96 respectively. Those two would go at it again during the 200-meters as Stewart garnered the top spot with a provisional qualifying time of 21.82. Wilhite just missed the required time in posting 22.38. The 400-meters saw similar success as freshman Javontee Brice won the event posting 51.24 with junior Justin McMurtry right behind at 51.62.

The team effort continued as senior Alex Schoneberger finished the 800-meter race in third-place with a time of 1:55.82. Fellow Mavericks Brennan Holman and Austin Pasch would finish in the top two spots in the mile with Holman leading the charge at 4:24.59. Senior Austin O'Brien finished the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:56.20, which is a provisional qualifying mark.

MSU would see three other student-athletes end the day with a provisional qualifying mark. In the long jump, Geno Bullard met the standard with a jump of 7.01m. Michael Sandle and Khalil Jor'dan achieved similar honors with their marks in the triple jump of 15.22m and 14.77m respectively.

Sophomore Frank Veldman finished third in the high jump with a leap of 2.00m. Darrius Brown also came in third-place during the pole vault reaching a height of 4.56m.

The field events rounded out with sophomore Adam Schultz finishing third in the weight throw at 14.75m.

The Mavericks will be back in action on January 10 as they host the MSU Alumni Open.
