Minnesota State Tracksters Compete at MSU Open

Mankato, Minn. --- The fourth-rated Minnesota State men's track and field team hosted the MSU Open on Saturday. In total four Mavericks finished in first place in their respected events.
 
After taking last weekend off, senior Chris Reed came back in a big way as he shattered his own MSU indoor record in the weight throw. Reed's previous best throw was 64' 10" but his first throw on Saturday traveled 66' 7". That places the thrower fourth in Division II. Reed also placed first in the shot put with a throw of 63' 0.75".
 
Senior Jerrell Hancock tied his career best in the 60-meter dash finishing in first place with a time of 6.77. He is ranked fifth in the Division II and tops the conference in that event. In the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, freshman Myles Hunter ran a provisional time of 7.95. That is a personal best for the sprinter and is the best time in the NSIC.
 
In the 200-meter dash, junior Anthony Gustafson came in third place crossing the finish line with a time of 22.19. A pair of freshman took the top two spots in the 1,000-meter run. Brennan Holman finished with a time of 2:33.22 while Brendan Gessner finished just behind him with a time of 2:34.14.
 
Senior David Pearcill finished third  in the triple jump for the Purple and Gold with a leap of 44' 9". Freshman London Thurman placed fifth, leaping 43' 5.25". Keyvan Rudd placed second in the high jump for the Mavericks as the senior had a jump of 6' 8.25". Freshman Frank Veldman placed third, clearing the same height.
 
In the long jump, freshman Rumeal Harris had a personal-best leap of 21' 6.25 placing third, while senior Randy Khieu placed fifth with a leap of 21' 4". The distance medley relay team of junior Alexander Schoneberger, junior Matthew Stocker, sophomore Zach Gearman, and sophomore Alex Lugo ran a provisional-qualifying time of 10:03.92, finishing in fourth place.
 
The Mavericks also provisionally qualified in the 4x400-meter relay as the team of Jerrell Hancock, junior Nathan Hancock, junior Carmono Lane, and Zach Gearman finished in first place with at time of 3:16.92.

MSU will continue action tomorrow at 2 p.m. as they host the two-day NSIC Multi meet inside Myers Field House.
