Mavericks Ready for NCAA Championships

MANKATO, Minn. --- The fifth-rated Minnesota State men's track and field team will be sending seven individual's and a 4x400-meter relay team to the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 14 and 15 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
 
The Mavericks will look to improve upon their fifth place finish at last year's championship meet in which they totaled 31 points. MSU has never won an indoor national title but has finished second twice (1985, 1989).
 
The athletes that will be representing the Purple and Gold include: Chris Reed, Keyvan Rudd, David Pearcill, Carmono Lane, Jerrell Hancock, Nathan Hancock, Myles Hunter, Zach Gearman and Khalil Jor'dan.
 
About Head Coach Jim Dilling: In Dilling's first year as head coach he led the Mavericks to their fourth NSIC Championship since joining the conference in 2009. Dilling was named 2014 NSIC Coach of the Year as his team accumulated 184 points, winning nine events at the conference championship meet.
 
Jerrell Hancock: Hancock, a senior sprinter from St. Louis, Mo., will be making his third trip to the indoor championships and fifth championship meet overall. Hancock will be participating in the 60 and 200-meter dash events as well as the 4x400-meter relay. Hancock qualified in the 200-meter dash by besting the automatic qualifying mark of 21.69 with a time of 21.67. His best finish in the 200-meter dash at the championships came last year as he came in second place with a time of 21.17. His best finish in the 60-meter dash at the championships came in 2012 where he finished eighth with a time of 6.89. He has earned All-American honors twice in the 200-meter dash while garnering All-American honors once in the 60-meter dash.
 
Chris Reed: Reed, a senior thrower from Omaha, Neb., will be participating in both the shot put and the weight throw events at this year's meet. The 2014 NSIC Indoor Field Athlete of the Year will be making his fifth appearance at the NCAA Championships (three indoor, two outdoor). Reed broke the NCAA Division II indoor shot put record this year with a booming throw of 65' 10 ¼" meeting the automatic-qualifying standard. Reed won the championship at the 2013 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships and is a two-time All American in the shot put event. His mark of 67' 7.5" in the weight throw is an MSU record and ranks him fourth in Division II. He earned All-American honors at last year's championships finishing fourth with a throw of 64' 8.5". Reed is also an All-American in the hammer throw and the discus.
 
Keyvan Rudd: Rudd, a senior jumper from Davenport, Iowa, will be making his fifth overall appearance at the NCAA Championships in the high jump (four indoor, one outdoor). Rudd earned All-American honors at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships finishing in seventh place with a leap of 6' 11 ½". His leap of 7' ¼" qualified him for this meet and places him sixth among Division II athletes.
 
Nathan Hancock: Hancock, a junior from Independence, Mo., will be participating in the heptathlon at this year's NCAA Championships. He is a two-time All-American in this event with his best finish coming at last year's meet where he finished in fifth place totaling 5,321 points. Hancock broke the school record racking up 5,371 points at the MSU Open and Multi earlier this season. That point total ranks him second amongst Division II athletes.
 
David Pearcill: Pearcill, a senior from Eagan, Minn., will make his NCAA Championships debut as he will be competing in the triple jump event. Pearcill won the event at the NSIC Championships and set a new NSIC indoor record in the process with a mark of 49' ¾" and is ranked ninth going into the NCAA Championships.
 
Khalil Jor'dan: Jor'dan, a junior from Eagan, Minn., will also be taking part in the triple jump event and making his first trip to the NCAA Championships. His qualifying mark of 48' 6 ¾" is the 12th best mark in Division II.
 
Myles Hunter: Hunter, a freshman from Conyers, Ga., will be making his first trip to the NCAA Championships. The NSIC Newcomer of the Year qualified in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.95. He won this year's NSIC Championship with a time of 8.12 and has the eighth fastest time in Division II.
 
Carmono Lane: Lane, a junior from Chicago, Ill., will be making his second trip to the NCAA Division II National Meet (one indoor, one outdoor). He will be part of the 4x400-meter relay team that qualified with the seventh fastest time in Division II (3:16.92). The sprinter was part of the 4x100 team that garnered All-American honors at last year's NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
 
Zach Gearman: Gearman, a sophomore from Burnsville, Minn., will be making his debut at the national meet. He will join Lane, N. Hancock, and J. Hancock in the 4x400-meter relay. They qualified for this year's event with a time of 3:16.92 ranking them seventh in Division II.
