Mankato, Minn. --- Top-rated Minnesota State closed out a home sweep over Alaska Anchorage in downing the Seawolves 4-0 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association contest played in Mankato Saturday evening.
The win gives the Mavericks their 17
th victory in the last 20 games.
After skating through a scoreless first period, junior forward
Teddy Blueger pounced on a rebound before putting the puck into the back of the net for his tenth goal of the season at 15:05 of the second.
The Mavericks added a trio of goals in the third period. Junior forward
Bryce Gervais connected for his team-high 20
th goal of the season with Minnesota State on the power play at 2:33. Then, at 8:03, senior defenseman
Zach Palmquist tallied his seventh goal of the season with another power play marker. Sophomore
Zach Stepan chipped in at 14:48 when he wristed a shot from the left wing past
Olivier Mantha for his third goal of 2014-15.
Blueger's goal is his sixth career game-winning tally and freshman forward
Brad McClure chipped in with a pair of assists in the win.
Minnesota State, which converted on two-of-four chances on the power play, outshot UAA by a 53-12 margin in the game as junior netminder
Stephon Williams upped his record on the season to 18-3-1. Williams now has eight career shut-outs in extending his school record.
The Mavericks are now 23-5-1 on the season (19-2-1 WCHA) with tonight's win. Alaska Anchorage stands 7-15-4 (4-14-2 WCHA).
Minnesota State continues league play next Friday and Saturday with a road series in Fairbanks with the University of Alaska.
