Mavericks Fall to Fort Hays State in NCAA Central Region Quarterfinal

Hays, Kan.  –  The Minnesota State women's basketball team fell to Fort Hays State in a NCAA Central Region Quarterfinal game, by the score of 74-57, on Saturday evening. 

Through a slow first four minutes of the game, where the Mavericks had already committed four turnovers and the Tigers were shooting just 1-8 from the field. Things would soon change however, as MSU came out firing from the field after the first media timeout of the game.

The Mavericks shot 6-8 from the field for about the next four minutes of the game, as MSU managed to go a 15-5 run, to give the Mavericks a 17-7 lead over the Tigers with 12:25 left before halftime.

MSU would extend its lead to as much as 13 points, 20-7, in the first half and would hold steady to its lead all the way to halftime. However, FHSU would close out the first half on a 7-0 to trim the Mavericks lead to just two at the break, 31-29.

In the first half of play, MSU shot 41% from the field, while FHSU shot just 30%. The Mavericks also shot 5-11 from beyond the arc, as the Tigers went 4-13 from three in the first half. Fort Hays outrebounded MSU in the first half, 24-21, and pulled down nine offensive rebounds. The Mavericks also turned the ball over seven times in the half, while the Tigers coughed it up four times.

Sophomore guard Britney Scherber led the Mavericks with eight points and two assists at halftime, including two made three's. Senior forward Jamie Bresnahan posted seven points, four boards and two blocks, while senior guard Aubrey Davis recorded six points, two rebounds and two assists in the first half.

To begin the second half, the Mavericks would hold on to their lead for the first six minutes of the half, as they would extend the lead to six, 39-33, over the Tigers with 15:49 left to play.  After that point FHSU would start take control in the game.

The Tigers would quickly take its first lead of the game, as they went on a 8-0 run, to put FHSU up 41-39, with 14:04 left in the second half. 

Unfortunately, the Mavericks would never be able to retake the lead in the game, as the Tigers steadily built their lead over MSU, after some timely shooting and offensive rebounding. FHSU  would take its first double-digit lead of the game at the 5:38 mark in the second half, 58-48, and would never look back. The Tigers went on to a 74-57 victory over the Mavericks.

In the second half, the Mavericks shot 38% from the field and hit just two three-pointers, while the Tigers shot an impressive 53% from the field. MSU also turned the ball over ten times, as FHSU turned it over four times. The Mavericks got outrebounded by the Tigers in the second half, 20-15, and were outscored by FHSU in the paint 16-8.

Overall, MSU turned the ball over 17 times, which led to 18 FHSU points off turnovers, while the Tigers turned it over just eight times, and the Mavericks had only five points of turnovers. The Tigers also outrebounded the Mavericks, 44-36, on the boards and 15 of the Tiger rebounds were from offensive end.

Bresnahan finished the game with team-highs of 12 points and seven rebounds, along with three blocks, while Davis pitched in with 10 points, five assists and two rebounds. Sophomore guard Sammie Delzotto ended the game with nine points and three boards of her own, as Scherber finished with eight points and two assists. Senior guard Ashley Olson chipped in with seven points, four rebounds and three assists, while senior forward Lexie Ulfers accumulated five points, five rebounds and four blocks in the loss.

Minnesota State ends its 2014-15 campaign with a 21-10 overall record.
