Mavericks Kick Off NSIC Outdoor Championships

Sioux Falls, S.D. --- The Minnesota State women's track and field team brought a solid showing as the NSIC Outdoor Track and Field Championships kicked off hosted by the University of Sioux Falls.

The MSU pole vaulting squad set the tone earning 13 points between
Faryn Wirkus (Edgar, Wis.), Nicole Larson (Milwaukee, Wis.), and Bryanna Sudman (Eden Prairie, Minn).  Wirkus took third at 12'1.5" with Larson and Sudman in fifth and sixth, respectively.  A pair also place in the high jump with junior Kayla Lindell (Cold Spring, Minn.) taking fifth at 5'3.75 and Amanda Stangler (St. Cloud, Minn.) in her last competition taking eighth with a leap of 5'1.75".  

Sophomore thrower
Emma Edelen (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) put in her best toss of her career in the discus finishing eighth at 141'2".  Edelen came into the championships ranked 16th in the conference.

In addition to those events finished already, there was a full slate of preliminary rounds on the track.  

A trio of Mavericks qualified for the finals in the 100-meter dash with
Sid'Reshia Floyd (New Hope, Minn.) leading the Mavericks with a time of 11.98.  Brieanna Puckett (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Mackenzie Beals (Marshalltown, Iowa) also sit in the top-nine.  Puckett and Beals will also take a second attempt in the 200-meters after posting times of 24.86 and 24.91, respectively.  Junior Brooke Foreman (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) saw a similar result and will get another chance tomorrow in the 100-meter hurdles after her posting of 14.55 as well as in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.54.

Maddi Sjelin (St. Michael, Minn.) qualified for the 800-meter finals after running 2:17.65.  Senior Halee Peterson (Cloquet, Minn.) will have one last effort in the 1500-meters after posting a preliminary time of 4:47.26.

The Mavericks currently sit in ninth place after seven events with 18 total points.

The NSIC Championships will wrap up tomorrow afternoon in Sioux Falls with the first field events set to begin at 11 a.m.
