BROOKINGS, S.D. --- The Minnesota State men's track and field team ended first-day action at the SDSU Indoor Invitational claiming a couple a new school-record in the process.
Adding on to his impressive indoor season senior
Kyran Stewart (Camilla, Ga.), already holding the fastest time in division II, took home the crown in the 200-meter dash with a blazing time of 21.16. Teammates
Richard Wilhite, Jr.. (Minneapolis, Minn.) and
Jake Gourley (Eagan, Minn.) also had an impressive showing finishing second and seventh, respectively.
Wilhite's final time of 21.79 provisionally qualifies him giving three Mavericks either automatic or provisional qualifying times.
The 600-meter run was no match for freshman
John Schuster (Wells, Minn.) as he destroyed the previous school record and meet record by almost a full second. He had a winning time of 1:19.68.
In the 1000-meter run
Michael Hoff (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) took ninth-place with a season best time of 2:32.73.
The distance medley relay team of
Brendan Gessner (Lino Lakes, Minn.),
Reid Diamond (San Antonio, Tex.),
Derek Cruz (Stevens Point, Wis.), and
Austin Pasch (Tomah, Wis.) finished fifth with a season best time of 10:05.55.
The field events also saw some success for the Mavericks. Taking the top two spots in the shot put for the first day were
Bryan Caffin (Hudson, Wis.) and
Jayme LaPlante(Chatfield, Minn.) with throws of 48'01.25'' and 46'03.25''. The weight throw had the same story line as the shot put with
Caffin leading the field in first place (55'05") and
Sam Udermann(Foley, Minn.) placed second (50'10.25'').
LaPlante tied for third.
