MANKATO, Minn. --- A combined effort guided the MSU women's track and field team at the annual Ted Nelson Classic.
In the 60-meter dash, the Mavericks took the third and fourth spots.
Briana Holt (Maryland Heights, Mo.) had a time of 7.84 and
Karlona Gregory (Minneapolis, Minn.) finished in 7.85. The 60-meter hurdles was dominated by junior
Altonice Williams (Miami, Fla.) finishing first with a school record time of 8.49. This is the third time this season Williams has broken the school record in the 60-meter hurdles. This is also the third best time in all of division II this season.
The 200-meters saw much of the same with freshman
Afure Adah (Moorhead, Minn.) leading a group of Mavericks in first-place at a personal best time of 24.91, which is the 18
th fastest time in division II this season and qualifies her provisionally for nationals. Taking the fifth-seventh spots were
Gregory (25.84),
Gabi Gaines (Waukee, Iowa), and
Amelia Kjos (River Falls, Wis.). Rounding out the top ten for the Mavericks was
Holt with a time of 26.17.
The 400-meter run saw five Mavericks place in the top ten. They were led by
Jessika Dieringer (Fredonia, Wis.) in fourth (59.22), which is her personal best time. Rounding out the top ten was
Kimmy Wreh (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) in fifth (59.66),
Taylor Naatz(Watertown, Wis.) in seventh (1:00.12),
Taylor Glover (Spencer, Iowa) in eighth (100:25), and
Sophia Simonson (Fargo, N.D.) in tenth (100:37).
Junior
Haley Kruger (Brandon, S.D.) finished the 600-meters in first-place with a time of 1:34.68, which was two-tenths of a second off of the school record. Yet more Mavericks would shine in the 800-meters with
Megan Allen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) posting a time of 2:17.79, while placing first. She was followed by
Maddi Sjelin (St. Michael, Minn.) in second with a time of 2:19.26. Placing seventh with a time of 2:22.65 was freshman
Bobbi Patrick (Middleton, Wis.).
Freshman
Sally O'Brien (Waseca, Minn.) crossed the line at 3:19.80 for the 1000-meters, which put her in eighth-place.
The 3000-meter run had three MSU runners place in the top ten. Running her way to sixth-place was senior
Samantha Soupir (Omaha, Neb.) in 10:59.21. Rounding out the top ten was a pair of freshman
Lily Paul (Cedar Grove, Wis.) in eighth and
Josie Braaten (Glasgow, Mont.) in tenth.
In the team relays,
Mackenzie Beals (Marshaltown, Iowa),
Kruger,
Williams and
Stacy Smidt (Sioux Falls, S.D.) came out on top in an exciting finish during the 4x400 with a final time of 3:57.17.
In the field events, success continued to run the day. Leading the high jumpers for MSU was senior
Kayla Lindell (Cold Spring, Minn.) placing third with a jump of 5'04.50''. Right behind her in fourth was
Brianna Ziolkowski (Hatley, Wis.) (5'03.25'').
The pole vault saw much of the same with senior
Faryn Wirkus (Edgar, Wis.) placing second at 13'01.50", which automatically qualifies her for nationals.
In the long jump there were two Mavericks that placed in the top ten. Coming in seventh was
Ariel Thomas (Los Angeles, Calif.) with a leap of 16'06.50''.
Rounding out the top ten wasÂ
Dieringer (Fredonia, Wis.) with a jump of 15''11''.
Thomas also took home a top ten finish in the triple jump placing tenth with a leap of 36''01.25''.
The weight throw had two Mavericks place in the top five. Coming in third with a personal best of 49'09.75'' was
Morgan Stampley (St. Paul, Minn.). Placing fourth was
Emma Edelen (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) with a toss of 48'07.25''.
