Birmingham, Ala. --- Two days into the Indoor Track and Field National Championship
Michael Sandle has claimed the national title in the triple jump with a leap of 52'10.25".
This is
Sandle's first indoor national championship after claiming the outdoor national title in the triple jump last season. The Eden Prairie native will now be a two-time All-American with the championship, this being his first indoor honors. Sandle's championship gives Minnesota State their ninth indoor individual championship.
The action began on Thursday as sophomore
John Schuster (Wells, Minn.) finished 11
th in the 400-meter championship with a time of 48.142.
Sandle would also compete Thursday in the long jump and finished 12
th with a distance of 23'3.25".
Friday began with
Sandle's championship jump to put ten points on the board for the Mavericks. Defending champion
Myles Hunter finished 15
th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.49.
Sandle competed in his third and final event, the high jump, and finished fourth in earning All-American honors in that event with a leap of 6'11.75" and earning five more team points.
Tomorrow's remaining event for the Mavericks will be the 4x400 relay where the team of
Schuster,
Isaiah Pitchford,
Tanner Ogren, and
Tanner Ogren will look to improve their school record time of 3:12.80 which ranks as the fifth best time going into nationals.
As a team, the Mavericks are currently in 5
th place with 15 points.
