WAYNE, Neb. --- Senior
Claire Ziegler posted her second double-double of the season but Minnesota State came up short at Wayne State, 92-73, on Saturday afternoon at Rice Auditorium.
Ziegler led Minnesota State with a team-best 16 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. She has now amassed 815 points with 507 rebounds in 81 career games to become the 14th member of the MSU 800-point/500-rebound Club. Lisa Walters (84-88) is the all-time leader with 2,034 points and 1,074 rebounds.
Both teams exchanged baskets in the opening quarter until Wayne State (14-4, 8-2 NSIC) created a four point, 14-10, edge after Kacie O'Connor netted a triple with 6:13 on the clock. Minnesota State (4-11, 2-7 NSIC) responded with four unanswered points with scores from sophomore
Taylor Drost and freshman
Kirstin Klitzke to lock the contest at 14-14. The Wildcats pushed back creating a seven point, 25-18, advantage to force the Mavericks to burn a timeout with 2:09 to play in the frame. Wayne State led after the first quarter, 31-25.
Minnesota State fought back with a 6-0 run highlighted by junior
Ashley Reed's steal and layup to lock the contest up, 31-31, at the 9:20 mark. Wayne State then assembled a 9-0 run of its own to create a nine point, 40-31, lead with 4:36 to play in the half. Sophomore
Taylor Klug halted the run for the Mavericks after Klitzke found her on the perimeter for the triple and her first points of the night. Wayne State led at the intermission, 51-40.
Ziegler set the standard for Minnesota State at the break with 10 points and four rebounds. Drost contributed eight points and three rebounds. The Mavericks shot 48.6% from field in comparison to the Wildcats 47.4%.
Following a Ziegler layup to open the second half, the Wildcats rattled off a 5-0 run to extend their lead up to 14, 56-42. Senior
Mackenzie Dahl ended the run creating a steal and going the length of the floor a layup, 56-44, with 6:08 on the clock. Wayne State then began to take control of the game as Haley Vesey buried a triple to make the score 67-47 at the 2:33 mark. Wayne State took a 71-52 advantage into the final quarter.
The Mavericks attempted to make a comeback with a 6-0 run with three points from junior
Monica Muth to make the score 76-61 with 7:35 remaining. Wayne State held off the Minnesota State surge pushing its lead back up to 20, 89-69, at the 2:37 mark. The Mavericks could not come any closer and went on to drop their fourth straight game, 92-73.
As a team, Minnesota State held the edge in rebounds (42-39), while Wayne State held the advantage in assists (17-10). The Mavericks shot 39.7% from the field in comparison to the Wildcats 43.5%.
Drost contributed 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting from field with five rebounds. Muth rounded out the top performers with 10 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Minnesota State returns to action at Minot State on Jan. 12. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
