Basketball

Heather Johnson

Heather Johnson is a junior guard from nearby Janesville, Minn. She is a major contributing factor to the success of the women’s basketball program this season. She has notched 17 20-plus point games this season in leading the team and ranking second in the conference in points. She had a career-high 31 points in the 87-61 win against Central Missouri Dec. 1. She set a new MSU record for consecutive free-throws made with 33. She has been conference player of the week twice this season. She is majoring in family life and child development, earning a 3.35 GPA.

 

Liz Trauger

Liz Trauger, Livermore, Iowa, is a sophomore forward that is leading the low-post ladies of the Mavericks in rebounding this season. She is averaging 8.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, tallying three double-doubles (10 or more points and rebounds). She had a career-game, 18 points and 18 rebounds, in a 69-65 win at Minnesota Duluth. She was named Academic All-NCC this season. She plans on majoring in business and currently holds a 3.93 GPA.

 

 

Bowling

Kara Bischoff

Kara Bischoff, a junior from St. Cloud, Minn., has been an integral part of the success of the Maverick bowlers the last two seasons. She took part in the team that made it to the NCAA Championships last season. On Nov. 15-17, she rolled to a 193.07 average in 15 games, for a ninth-place finish at the 2007 Maverick Challenge. That mark led the MSU bowlers to a second-place finish. She helped the Mavericks place sixth in the 5th Annual Holiday Collegiate Bowling Classic in Bessemer, Ala. March 1-2. She averaged 215.6 and finished eighth overall. As a student, she is majoring in finance with a 3.71 GPA.  

 

Sara Cahill

Sara Cahill is a strong reason why the Maverick keglers are currently the 10th-ranked team in the country. The junior from Tinley Park, Ill. participated in the Mavericks’ run at a national championship last season. This season she had a 19th-place finish in the Maverick Challenge where MSU placed second. She finished 18th with an average of 200.7 in the Holiday Collegiate Bowling Classic where the Mavericks finished sixth amongst 16 teams. In the classroom, Cahill has a 3.54 GPA while pursuing a management degree. 

Cross Country/Track and Field

Jenny Goesch

Senior Jenny Goesch was named an NCAA All-American last year. A sprinter from Germantown, Wis., Goesch finished second in the 800-meter run in the NCC Championships. Her time of 2:16.07 was good enough for a provisional-qualifying time for the NCAA Championships. She is also a member of the 4x400-meter relay team that has had multiple first-place finishes this season and qualified for the NCAA Championships. She has a 3.50 GPA as a family consumer science major. She has been named to the NCC Commissioner’s Honor Roll the last two seasons.

 

Brittany Henderson

Just a sophomore, Brittany Henderson, has already earned two conference titles and been named an NCAA All-American. The Milwaukee, Wis. native won the 60-meter dash in the NCC Championships this season and placed second in the 200-meter dash. Her marks in both the events qualified her for nationals. She owns the school and conference record in the 60-meter dash, with a time of 7.53 seconds, setting that mark on day one of the NCC Championships this season. She earned a spot on the NCC Commissioner’s Honor Roll this season with a 3.52 GPA in mass communications.

 

Katelin Rains

Kaitlin Rains, a junior from Spring Lake Park, Minn., has an amazing resume as a Maverick. She is an NCAA champion in the pole vault and was named an NCAA All-American last season. This track and field season, Rains is on her way to another title, surpassing her previous NCAA Division II indoor record of 14’ ½. She won the NCC championship in the pole vault and triple jump this season, giving her 10 conference titles total. She has MSU records in the triple jump and the pole fault. She has been named conference athlete of the week 11 times in her career, with five this season. She is an elementary education major with a 3.41 GPA. She has been named to the NCC Commissioner’s Honor Roll the last two seasons.

Golf

Alecia Prins

Alecia Prins, a senior golfer from Redwood Falls, Minn., finished the Fall 2007 season with a 83.6 stroke average, good for fourth on the team. She had three top-10 finishes, including a spot at sixth in the Husky Invite. She had her low round of 80 at the Mustang Invitational in Marshall, Minn. Prins has a perfect swing in the classroom, owning a 4.00 GPA while double majoring in marketing and spanish.

 

 

Trisha Schill

Senior golfer Trisha Schill helped the Mavericks to a fourth-place finish at the 2007 NCC Championships this past Fall. She was 23rd, but her tournament was highlighted with a hole-in-one on a 138-yard par three. The Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. native finished the 2007 season with an 83.2 average (third on the team), she placed third in the Husky Invite where MSU claimed the victory. She is a elementary education major with a 3.75 GPA.

 

 

Hockey

Kristina Bunker

Senior forward Kristina Bunker finished her senior campaign with 11 goals and six assists for 17 points, good for third on the team. Hailing from Blaine, Minn., her 11 goals is a career-high for goals in a season. She finished her career as the all-time assists (47) and shots (402) leader. She has the most games played out of any Maverick in the program’s 10 years with 140 games played. With 78 points, Bunker is second on MSU’s all-time points chart. More importantly, Bunker has a long list of academic achievements earning a spot on two All-WCHA Academic Teams and being named a WCHA Scholar-Athlete for the last three years. She is a corrections major with a 3.78 GPA.

 

Andreanne Thibault

Andreanne Thibault, a senior defenseman, finished her senior year with her most productive offensive season as a Maverick. A L’Original, Ont. native, Thibault had three goals and seven assists for 10 points. She tied her career-high for goals in a season and broke her previous career-highs in assists and points. Her performance at Robert Morris Dec. 29-30 earned her a WCHA Defensive Player of the Week award, the first of her career. She has also performed well in the classroom, earning a degree in physical education, while earning All-Academic team honors the last two seasons and being named a WCHA Scholar-Athlete this season, currently holding a 3.49 GPA.

 

Soccer

Marti Klinsing

Midfielder Marti Klinsing made an immediate impact on a young Maverick soccer squad in 2007. Klinsing transferred from the Division-I University of Minnesota and had 17 points (6 goals, 5 assists), ranking her third on the team. The junior from Wayzata, Minn. finished tied for second on the team in assists and third in goals. In final NCC stats, she was tied for third in assists and tied for eighth in goals and points. Klinsing was a third team All-American, apart of the Daktronics All-Central Region First Team and on the All-NCC Second Team. She is a pre-mass communications major.

 

Gina Paletta

Midfielder Gina Paletta was a threat on the offensive and defensive side during her sophomore campaign in 2007. Paletta, Omaha, Neb., recorded three goals and two assists last season for eight points. She started all 21 games for the Mavericks. She was named to the All-NCC First Team and the 2007 Academic All-NCC Team. She earned the academic honor because she has a 3.78 GPA in physical education (non-teaching) and has been named to the Dean’s List while at MSU.

Carly Petersen

Forward Carly Petersen moved to fourth on MSU’s all-time goal scoring list and sixth on MSU’s all-time points list during her junior season with the Mavericks. The Verona, Wis. native finished the 2007 season first on the team in assists (6), second in points (20) and goals (7), helping the Mavericks reach the NCAA Central Region Finals for just the third  time in school history. In final North Central Conference rankings, she was second in assists, fourth in shots (46) and points, and tied for fourth in goals. She was named to the All-NCC First Team and the 2007 Academic All-NCC Team for the second consecutive season. She holds a 3.66 GPA in psychology and has been named to the Dean’s List during her time at MSU.

 

Softball

Katie Reed

Junior infielder Katie Reed finished her sophomore season third on the team in hitting with a .340 batting average. Her solid play at the end of the season earned her First-Team All-Region honors by Daktronics. She posted a .948 fielding percentage while tallying 55 hits and knocking in 29 runs. She was named NCC Player of the Week and earned a spot on the NCC Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll for her success in the classroom. She is a recreation, parks and leisure services major with a 3.77 GPA.

Samantha Rohr

Senior Samantha Rohr came to the Mavericks last season from Iowa Lakes Community College. Rohr, Lakeville, Minn., headed MSU’s pitching staff with a 27-9 record, aiding the Mavericks to a 45-15 record, the second highest victory tally in school history. She led the team and conference in earned run average (1.85). She gathered-up a bunch of awards in her maiden season as Maverick, including First-Team All-Region from the NFCA and Daktronics. She was the only pitcher in the conference to earn 20-plus victories, while striking out 184 batters and only allowing 29 walks. She is a psychology major with a 3.38 GPA.

 

Swimming & Diving

Kaitlin Hernandez

Senior swimmer, Kaitlin Hernandez, helped the Mavericks to a fifth-place showing at the North Central Conference tournament this season. The St. Peter, Minn. native finished eighth overall in the 100-yard freestyle and her time in the “B” final was a qualifying mark for the national championships. Hernandez has picked-up a first place finish this year in the 50-yard freestyle (2), 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. She has also helped the 200-yard freestyle relay team to multiple first-place finishes. She has had success in and out of the pool, earning a spot on the 2007 and 2008 NCC Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll and the Academic All-NCC At-Large Team last season. She is a social work major with a 4.00.

Kelly Kolmos

Kenosha, Wis. native, Kelly Kolmos, is a senior swimmer who is making a splash in the pool and in the classroom. She participated in five different events for the Mavericks this season, the 200, 500 and 1000-yard freestyle and 100 and 200-yard butterfly. She also is apart of the 200 and 400-yard medley relay. This season she was named to the NCC Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll for the third consecutive season. She has a 3.49 GPA, while majoring in elementary education.

 

Tennis

Kate Maland

Kate Maland is a junior from Redwood Falls, Minn. She is apart of a Maverick tennis team that is 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference as of March 4. Along with her doubles partner Sarah Madigan, the two are 7-4 overall with a three-match winning streak. Both her singles wins this season have come in team wins for MSU. Last season she was recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for her academic success. She owns a 3.54 GPA in marketing.

 

 

Sarah Westman

A junior from St. James, Minn., Sarah Westman, is 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference in doubles play this season. Her team is 9-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play for 2008. She helped the team defeat Minnesota Crookston 9-0 with a singles victory Feb. 22. Last season she was recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for her academic success. She is a mathematics teaching major with a 3.90 GPA.

 

 

Volleyball

Allison Kunath

Junior middle hitter Allison Kunath finished the 2007 season with 72 kills and 40 total blocks in 47 games played. The Hopkins, Minn. native is an art major with a 4.00 GPA, earning herself a spot on the NCC Academic Volleyball Honor Roll. She played one year and lettered at West Virginia State University.

 

 

Ashley Nachreiner

Ashley Nachreiner, a junior outside hitter, finished the 2007 season leading the team in kills with 403 and in service aces with 41. The Third Team All-American helped MSU get to the first round of the North Central Regional Tournament. The Round Rock, Texas native was also a member of the All-North Central Region Team and the All-NCC First team. She is 38 kills short from becoming the sixth member of the 1,000 kill club. In 2005, she was named NCC Freshman of the Year. She is studying marketing at MSU.

 

Danielle Zimmermann

Danielle Zimmermann, Wellsburg, Iowa, led the team in total blocks with 135 in 2007. The junior middle hitter played in 100 of a possible 102 games for the Mavericks last season. Along with being strong at the net on defense, she provided an offensive threat with 186 kills, ranking her third on the team. She has succeeded on and off the court, earning a spot on the 2007 Academic All-North Central Conference Team. Pursuing a degree in management, Zimmermann posts a 3.78 grade point average and has been named to the Dean’s List.
