Minnesota State Women Play Host to Huskies, Wrap up Series in St. Cloud

Mankato, Minn.--- The Mavericks, now 4-5-3 on the year and 2-5-3 in WCHA  play, continue conference play December 4, when they play host to the St. Cloud State Huskies in Mankato, Minn. at All Seasons Arena. The two teams then travel to St. Cloud to finish the series on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m. The game will be held at National Hockey Center.

Minnesota Duluth Series Notes: The Mavericks continued the 2009-10 conference portion of their schedule traveling to #5 Minnesota Duluth this last weekend...The Mavericks entered Saturday night’s game with a 3-4-3 overall and 1-4-3 in the WCHA...The Mavericks defeated the Bulldogs in Saturday’s action after a last second goal...UMD defeated Minnesota State in Sunday’s contest, 7-1...In Friday’s contest the Bulldogs got on the board first, but the Mavericks finished ahead after a last second goal...The Bulldogs opened up the scoring in the first period at the 16:04 mark, when Bulldog Vanessa Thibault tallied an unassisted goal beating sophomore goaltender Alli Altmann...The Mavericks entered the second period down 1-0, but Bulldogs increased their lead to 2-0 just 4:20 into the second period when Jessica Wong of UMD scored on an assist from Audrey Cournoyer...The Mavericks continued to battle midway through the second when senior forward Ida Clark scored her third career goal at the 12:48 mark...Clark was assisted by senior blueliner Amy Udvig and junior forward Nina Tikkinenwho tallied her sixth assist of the season. At 15:34 mark the Mavericks tied up the game on senior captain and forward Kala Buganski first goal of the season...Buganski was assisted by freshman forward Lauren Smith and senior forward Ashley Young...Smith earned her sixth assist of the year while Young tallied her eighth assist of the season...After 19:26 of scoreless hockey, the Maverick scored the game-winning goal from Young...Buganski and Smith assisted Young on the game-winner...Altmann finished with 34 saves, allowing only two goals giving her a .944 save percentage...MSU finished 0-3 on power plays, while the Bulldogs end 0-4 with an extra skater...UMD won in the face-off circle, 33-30...After a last second victory in last night’s game, Minnesota State fell to the fifth ranked Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth, 7-1...The Western Collegiate Hockey Association game was played at DECC...The Mavericks opened the scoring at the 11:04 mark in the first period...Senior forward Ida Clark earned her second goal of the year, fourth of her career...Clark was assisted by Moira O’Connor who tallied her fifth assist of the season...The Bulldogs tied it up 14:30 into the first period on a Sarah Murray goal that was assisted by Katherine Wilson...The Bulldogs continued the scoring in the second and third periods, defeating MSU, 7-1...The Mavericks finished 0-4 on power play chances while UMD scored on three of their six power play chances...The Bulldogs also out shot the Mavericks, 36-26.

About St. Cloud: The Huskies are 7-9-0 and 4-8-0 in the WCHA. In their last action, the Huskies traveled to Providence, Rhode Island to take on the Brown University Bears and earned a sweep. St. Cloud defeated the Bears on Friday night by a score of 5-4. The Huskies carried that momentum into Saturday’s game and earned the sweep on Saturday by a score of 3-2.  St. Cloud is led by senior forward Caitlin Hogan (12-7--19),  senior forward Meaghan Pezon (8-11--19) and  senior forward Holly Roberts (6-10--16). All of their scorers rank in the top twelve in scoring in the conference. In net for the Huskies will likely be Ashley Nixon  who owns a 5-5-0 record, holds a 2.80 goals against average and a .921 save percentage. Nixon’s save percentage ranks fourth in the conference while her win percent ranks fifth. Hogan and Pezon are tied at sixth for points per game in the WCHA.

MSU/SCS History: The Mavericks are 21-20-4 all-time against the Huskies. Two Minnesota State’s victories over St. Cloud came in the 2006-07 season and the other in 2003-04.
