Minnesota State Women to Host #5 Minnesota Duluth at All Seasons Arena

Mankato, Minn.--- The Mavericks, now 4-13-5 on the year and 2-11-5-3 in Western Conference Hockey Association play, play host to the fifth-ranked Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs this weekend, January 22 and 23 at All Seasons Arena. Friday night’s contest will start at 7:07 p.m. and Saturday’s contest at 3:07 p.m.

About Minnesota Duluth: The Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth are 15-7-2 overall and 11-5-2-1 in the WCHA. Minnesota Duluth is led by senior forward Emmanuelle Blais who owns 14-19--33, junior forward Laura Fridfinnson who owns 10-15--25 and rookie forward  Katherine Wilson who has earned 12-12--24 so far this season. Their leading goaltender this season is freshman Jennifer Hars. Hars owns a 15-7-2 record, a .931 save percentage and 2.15 goals against average. The Bulldogs rank third in scoring in the WCHA with their 3.08 points per game average and third in scoring defense with 2.17 points per game. Blais leads the WCHA in scoring with her 33 points, she sits tied for fourth in goals with 14 and tied for first with her 19 assists. Fridfinnson and Wilson each own four game winning goals which ranks them tied for fourth in the league. Senior defenseman Jaime Rasmussen sits fourth in the league in defenseman scoring with her 5-10--15. Freshman forwards Wilson (12-12--24) and Audrey Cournoyer (4-14--18) sit second and third, respectively.

MSU/UMD History: The Mavericks are 4-36-3 all-time against the Bulldogs. Earlier this season the Mavericks traveled to Duluth, Minnesota for a two game series with the Bulldogs and finished the weekend 1-1-0. Minnesota State defeated UMD in the first contest 3-2, but fell to the Bulldogs 7-1 in the series finale. In the Mavericks 3-2 win over the Bulldogs earlier this season, senior forward Ida Clark tallied her third career goal to cut the Mavericks deficit to just one. Senior forward Kala Buganski tied up the contest with her first goal of the season late in the second. After 19:26 of scoreless hockey in the third period, the Mavericks scored the game-winning goal from senior center Ashley Young.

Ohio State Notes: The Mavericks are currently 4-13-5 overall and 2-11-5-3 in the WCHA after a 0-2-0 weekend...The team finished the weekend with 51 shots, 0-8 on the power play, 1-10 on penalty kills and 13 penalties for 26 minutes...MSU finished Friday night’s contest with a 6-0 loss...The Buckeyes opened scoring with two first period goals...The first coming from Minttu Tuominen assisted by Paige Semenza and Liz Rizzo...Buckeyes Christina Mancuso and Rachel Davis set up Tuominen to give OSU the 2-0 lead...Ohio State continued their scoring streak as they took advantage of a power play opportunity early in the second period as sophomore Natalie Spooner found the back of the net...Laura McIntosh and Hokey Langan assisted Spooner on the play...Tuominen, Semanza, and Mancuso all recorded second period goals to wrap up the scoring for the evening, giving OSU a 6-0 win...Minnesota State out shot Ohio State 26-21 in the contest...The Mavericks finished 0-3 on power play opportunities while the Buckeyes ended the contest 1-7 with the extra skater...The Mavericks wrapped up the series against Ohio State on Saturday with a 3-2 loss...After losing to the Buckeyes 6-0 Friday night, the Mavericks took the 1-0 at the 11:37 mark on a goal from senior forward Jenna Hewitt (Anoka, Minn.)...Hewitt was assisted by freshman Lauren Zrust (Blaine, Minn.) on the play...The goal marked Hewitt’s first goal of the season and Zrust recorded her first career assist as a Maverick on the first period score...OSU answered back minutes later as forward Hokey Langan beat MSU goaltender  (Eagan, Minn.) at the 17:28 mark in the first...McIntosh and LaRocque both recorded assists on the goal...MSU regained momentum early in the second period when center Moira O’Connor (Chicago, Ill.) beat OSU netminder Chelsea Knapp glove side...Christina Lee (Maple Plain, Minn.) and Amy Udvig (New Brighton, Minn.) both had helpers on the go ahead goal...Two early third period goals erased the Buckeye deficit and gave them a 3-2 lead...Natalie Spooner recorded the equalizer and Langan’s second goal of the afternoon gave Ohio State the lead for good...Altmann finished the contest with 28 saves...The Mavericks finished the contest 0-5 with the extra skater and OSU finished 0-3 on power plays.
