Mavericks Return to Action Jan. 7-8 to Face Minnesota on the Road

Mankato, Minn.--- The Minnesota State women’s hockey team will take some time off from competition and return to action Jan. 7-8 to face the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers for a WCHA-series. The Mavericks (6-11-3 overall, 5-8-1-0 WCHA) and Golden Gophers (13-6-0 overall, 8-6-0-0 WCHA) will drop the puck at 6:07 p.m. Friday, and wrap-up the series on Saturday at 4:07 p.m.

Program History:
The 2010-11 season will mark the 13th year of women’s hockey as a varsity sport at Minnesota State…MSU has competed in 439 games...The Mavericks hold a 126-273-40 (.333) all-time record.

Follow the Leader: Junior defenseman Ariel Mackley will serve as the team captain this season, with juniors forward Moira O’Connor and junior defenseman Jackie Otto as the alternate captains.

A Look at the Golden Gophers:  The Minnesota Golden Gophers own a 13-6-0 overall record with a 8-6-0-0 mark in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association...Last time they were on the ice they swept Ohio State, defeating them 6-0 on 12/10, and picking up a 2-1 over time win on 12/12...They have recorded 60 goals to their opponents 33 goals...Minnesota has scored 22 goals in the first period, 23 in the second and 14 in the third...The Golden Gophers have tallied 607 shots to their opponents 512 shots...UM is 18-78 (.231) on the power play, while its opponents are 8-93 (.086)...The Golden Gophers have 13 skaters that have had at least one goal and have had 17 skaters that have had at least one point this season...Minnesota is led by is led by: freshman forward Kelly Terry (8-14--22), freshman forward Amanda Kessel (6-14--20), freshman forward Sarah Davis (5-11--16) and junior forward Anne Schleper (4-10--14)...Sophomore forward Becky Kortum is the owner of a team-high three power play goals...Sophomore defenseman Megan Bozek leads the team in penalties with 13 for 26 minutes...UM has had one primary goaltender in net for them this season, sophomore netminder Noora Raty who owns a team-best 12-4-0 record, a 1.55 G.A.A., .945 save percentage and 412 saves...Minnesota’s head coach is Brad Frost who is in his fourth season as the leader of the Golden Gopher women’s hockey program. He began taking control of the squad for the 2007-08 season as the interim head coach, then was named head coach on April 16, 2008.

MSU/UM History: The Minnesota State Mavericks are owners of a 3-51-3 overall record against Minnesota...The two teams faced-off earlier this season in Mankato and the Mavericks were swept by scores of 1-0 and 6-2...In the two games, freshman Kathleen Rogan and sophomore Lauren Zrust tallied the goals, while freshman Tracey McCann assisted on Zrust’s goal and sophomore’s Emilia Andersson and Lauren Smith assisted on Rogan’s goal.
